The NSW Blues have taken first blood in the first match of the historic Women’s State of Origin series with a 22-12 win at Suncorp Stadium.

Heading into enemy territory in the opening match of the first three-match series, NSW left the record 25,492-strong crowd stunned after flying out of the blocks.

Emma Tonegato opened the scoring in the fifth minute after Olivia Kernick put Caitlin Johnson through a gap before the Blues fullback raced through in support to score.

It was the perfect start for NSW but would only get better four minutes later.

Winger Jaime Chapman made a break which had put the Blues in good position for the first try, but she went a whole lot better for NSW’s second.

After receiving the ball on her own 15m line, Chapman took off, bursting through the Maroons line and into the backfield.

While the Maroons gave chase, Chapman made them all seem like they were standing still as she veered past defending women’s Dally M Medallist Tamika Upton in a scintillating move.

She cruised to the line.

“What a sight in full flight, one of the great athletes in rugby league has scored one of the best individual tries we have seen in any Origin,” Nine’s Peter Psaltis screamed.

“She runs like a gazelle,” Phil Gould added.

“What about the stride on this young girl? That is breathtaking. Absolutely brilliant.

“That’s a moment her and her family will never forget.”

Darren Lockyer called it “Eric Grothe-like”.

It was an incredible play from Chapman who went 85m almost untouched in an electric run.

14-year-old sports journalist Abbie from Her Way tweeted: “JAIME CHAPMAN are you kidding me!!!! One of the great Origin tries. She’s run 80 metres and beaten about four defenders.”

The Western Weekender’s Lachlan Jeffrey posted: “I think Jaime Chapman expected to score as soon as she got the ball 80m away from the line. What a run. Made Upton, a very good defensive fullback, look pedestrian. Hell of a start by NSW.”

Triple M Queensland’s Elliott Lovejoy commented: “Jaime Chapman. Wow. Forgot how quick she is. Red Hot start. In for another cracking year at @GCTitans.”

One fan suggested: “Jaime Chapman! She’s like the #NRLW version of the great Guru Grothe Snr back in the day. What a weapon! Unstoppable.”

Another fan said: “Jaime Chapman is a ridiculously underrated football player and I don’t know why. That girl is proper elite.”

The Blues took a 14-0 lead to the break and extended it to 16-0 with a second penalty goal just after halftime.

While the Maroons hit back in the 53rd minute through Upton, it was too little too late as the Blues wrapped up the win through Caitlan Johnston’s 64th minute try.

The Maroons had a consolation try soon after, but game one has gone to NSW.

Game two kicks off on Thursday June 6 at McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle with game three on June 27 at Queensland Country Bank Stadium in Townsville.
