The photo, uploaded to the Broncos Facebook page, showed Robinson training in a singlet while carrying the ball. It attracted more than 200 comments, which contained multiple comments comparing Robinson to a man.

Robinson uploaded the image to her personal account along with snippets of the disparaging comments.

“I never usually read social media comments, or let them affect me,” she wrote.

“However I just wanted to say that no one should be ashamed or self-conscious to have muscles.

“It shows dedication and hard work. I love my muscles.

“Julia xoxo.”

The vile comments have been heavily criticised by fans on social media with Broncos CEO Dave Donaghy calling out the trolls.

“The Brisbane Broncos condemn the comments on social media aimed at our champion NRLW player Julia Robinson,” he said.

“Julia has been a Bronco since the very first day our NRLW team came together in 2018 and we are all angered by the words written by these trolls.

“Julia is one of the hardest workers in both our men’s and women’s program, and her consistently elite performances on the field reflect the effort she puts into her training and preparation.

“That’s not to mention the widespread work she does in the community, and the inspiration she gives to young athletes, both boys and girls.

“Surely our society has moved beyond athletes and role models like Julia being belittled for a photo that showcases everything that is great about our sport.

“The Broncos stand behind Julia and we can’t wait to see her and the rest of our NRLW squad kick off their season on Sunday night against the Knights.”

NRL journalist Brad Walter labelled the comments “disgusting”.

“This is disgusting behaviour and I don’t think you should have protected those trolls by covering up their Twitter names,” he wrote.

Former NRL player Jamie Soward was quick to condemn the comments.

“Absolutely disgusting behaviour from those people. I marvel at the athleticism my NRLW girls have and proud of all female athletes. Those people should have to run at #julia and see if they have anything to say.” he wrote.

Calls for the league to do more for the mental health of players and coaches have amplified this week following the shock death of NRL great Paul Green.

The 49-year-old Green was found dead at his Brisbane home. It has been confirmed he took his own life.
