NRL 2024: Broncos rocked by three more injuries as NRL’s casualty ward continues to expand
The NRL casualty ward is running out of room with the Broncos losing three more players to injury.
The Broncos have suffered a triple injury blow with Billy Walters, Tristan Sailor and Ben Te Kura all facing time on the sidelines as the NRL’s casualty ward continues to grow at an alarming rate.
The game has been ravaged by injuries to some of its biggest stars, with Brisbane already without Adam Reynolds (biceps) and Jesse Arthars (jaw) for an extended period.
“Billy picked up a wrist ligament strain against the Tigers a few weeks ago and then copped a knock on it against the Eels on Friday night,” Broncos head of performance Dave Ballard said.
“He is recovering well but we will take a conservative approach and he will sit out this week. He is a chance to play next week but we will be guided by how he progresses at training.
“Ben suffered a serious injury to his Lisfranc joint while playing for Souths Logan Magpies in the Hostplus Cup over the weekend and will require surgery in the next few days.
“He will need at least four months of recovery time and the club will provide him with all the support he requires as he goes through the rehab process.
“Tristan will miss 4-6 weeks with a high ankle sprain picked up playing for Souths Logan in the same game as Ben. He will have surgery this week and move into his rehab program once the injury settles down.”
There is a positive for the Broncos with Jock Madden set to return in the halves at Magic Round after missing last week’s win over the Eels with a pec injury.
Madden has filled in admirably in the past but will get an extended run now with Reynolds expected to be out for a few months.
“He has felt in the past that he might be there for only a game or two until ‘Reyno’ gets back and now he knows that he has the opportunity to hold that spot and cement his spot and do his job for the team,” Broncos prop Corey Jensen said.
“We need him. We won’t have Reyno for 12 weeks, so he has to be the halfback to get us around the field and let Walshy (Reece Walsh) and Ezra (Mam) do their stuff off the back of him.”
