NRL 2021: Canberra Raiders sign former Titans co-captain Jamal Fogarty

The Canberra Raiders have snared a rival side’s co-captain, who will call the nation’s capital home for at least the next three seasons.

After weeks of speculation, the Canberra Raiders announced on Monday they had secured the services of Gold Coast Titans co-captain Jamal Fogarty for at least the next three years.

The emergence of young Titans playmaker Toby Sexton this season spelt trouble for Fogarty, and given rookie fullback Jayden Campbell is likely to push AJ Brimson into the halves, there simply didn’t appear to be room for Fogarty on the glitter strip in 2022.

Fogarty’s move to the nation’s capital looks set to solve the Raiders’ own halves headaches.

After the club granted homesick Englishman George Williams a release midway through the year, Sam Williams and Matt Frawley both spent time at halfback, but Fogarty is likely to beat them to a full-time spot in the halves next year.

“I’m super excited about coming down and meeting the squad,” Fogarty said.

“The Raiders have a great roster and coach in Ricky (Stuart) and they’ve had some success over the past few seasons and I’m really excited to join them and be a part of it.”

Fogarty said he looked forward to working closely with Dally M-winning Raiders playmaker Jack Wighton.

“Playing with someone like Jack is something I’m really looking forward to and building a relationship with him on-field,” he said.

“He’s an X-factor player and hopefully I can do my job and help to free him up to do what he does best.”

The Titans wished Fogarty well in the next chapter of his career.

“Jamal has played an important role at our club over the past two seasons and has been the ultimate professional,” said Titans coach Justin Holbrook, under whom Fogarty became a regular first-grader on the Gold Coast.

“I want to thank him for the contribution that he has made to the Titans and we wish Jamal, Kahlia and their family all the best for the future.”

Fogarty’s former halves partner, Ash Taylor, is also on the way out at the Titans but has yet to secure a contract elsewhere for 2022.

Taylor has struggled for form under Holbrook and has been linked with a move to the Warriors, who are in desperate need of a game-managing half.
