The next NSW Origin could be confirmed as early as next week after a big coaching call from the man expected to take the role.

Michael Maguire has stepped down from his role as New Zealand coach, opening the door for him to replace Brad Fittler as NSW boss in 2024.

Speculation has been rife for weeks that Maguire was the raging favourite to take over as Blues coach next year, but that was complicated by the fact he was under contract with the Kiwis until the 2026 World Cup.

Maguire was reportedly more than willing to do both jobs given the NSW one would be only part-time and wouldn’t clash with his Kiwis duties, but there were question marks over whether it was a conflict of interest given he would potentially be developing players at State of Origin level who could one day play a role in beating New Zealand on the biggest stage.

The Blues have held off announcing Fittler’s replacement as they sort out the final details of Maguire’s contract, but there’s every chance they confirm his appointment as early as next week now they don’t have to worry about the Kiwis job.

Maguire won 12 of his 18 Tests in charge, including a stunning 30-0 upset over the Kangaroos in the Pacific Championships final earlier this month which only enhanced his chances of coaching the Blues.

The NSWRL have been searching for a new coach since Fittler stepped down despite being offered a new contract, and Maguire – who is also an assistant with the Raiders – now looms as the obvious replacement.

“The mana, history and whakapapa associated with the black and white jersey mean any role in and around the Kiwi team is the ultimate privilege,” NZRL chief executive Greg Peters said.

“Michael’s dedication to the role and players has seen him achieve incredible things over the last six years.

“Michael is the ultimate professional and has connected deeply with the NZRL whānau and playing group. We wish him nothing but success in his next career step.”

It’s unclear who will replace Maguire, with legendary halfback Stacey Jones one of the leading candidates to step into a role which looks enticing given what happened in Hamilton.
