Matthew Timoko produces try of the year contender as Raiders topple Eels

A Canberra Raiders star has produced a contender for try of the year in a moment that left the commentary crew in sheer disbelief.

Raiders star produces try of the year contender

Matthew Timoko produced a moment of absolute magic as the Canberra Raiders ran riot against the Parramatta Eels.

The Raiders centre wasn’t going to be denied in the second half after James Schiller broke away down the sideline.

Schiller dished it back inside to Timoko who danced around Clint Gutherson before Dylan Brown attempted to stop his run.

As Timoko tried to fend off the tackle, he was swung around by Brown but the Raiders star kept his wits about as he stretched out to put the ball down while keeping his feet high off the ground.

The absurd try-scoring feat left the commentary box in disbelief.

“Just watch this for a put down … that’s brilliant,” Steve Roach said on Fox League.

Matt Russell added: “He keeps the boots in the air knowing the hand has to get to ground first. It’s even better in replay.”

Roach said: “There’s nothing better than that. How good is that.”

The Raiders took their onslaught to new levels in the second half as they ran away to claim the 41-8 victory.

Parramatta had no answers with ball in hand, wasting early chances in good territory. The only highlights came in the second half when Maika Sivo scored two almost identical tries.

One of the game’s best on his day, Dylan Brown’s struggles as chief playmaker was laid bare for all to see while rookie five-eighth Blaize Talagi was hardly sighted.

A lack of firepower from the Eels’ engine room didn’t help their cause. Only Reagan Campbell-Gillard managed to crack the 100-metre mark.

Xavier Savage is finally beginning to live up to the hype that has followed him since his debut three seasons ago.

Restricted to just one appearance last year, Savage has featured in every game for the Raiders this season.

Savage ensured his place on the end-of-season highlight reel with a flashy performance against the Eels, underlined by a scintillating 70-metre try-scoring effort late in the first half.

Savage would leave opposite winger Sean Russell in his wake, with a swift change of direction on a backline spread in the Raiders half, before making light work of the covering Clinton Gutherson.

With a pat on the back by teammate Strange to assure him he was in the clear, Savage continued on his way to finish the special effort.

Savage enjoyed the spoils of over 200 metres and a Danny Levi try assist by game’s end.
