Massive question answered as Roosters lock in star half until 2025

The Roosters have locked down one of the most exciting halves in the competition, but it could spell trouble for a veteran teammate.

The Sydney Roosters have locked in one of their most important pieces, with young half Sam Walker inking a new two-year deal which will keep him at the club until at least the end of the 2025 season.

Walker has had an incredible two years in first grade, taking out the 2021 Dally M Rookie of the Year honours and guiding his side to the finals on both occasions.

The 20-year-old had another terrific season this year, setting up 16 tries and improving his goalkicking percentage from 53.49 to 77.78, helped by a stunning 12/12 against the Wests Tigers late in the year.

Tipped to make his State of Origin debut in the coming years, Walker’s decision to stay gives an insight into the Roosters’ plans going forward.

They looked at their best when he was shifted from five-eighth to halfback midway through the season, and it’s a position he will make his own for as long as he wants, with veteran Luke Keary happy to play second fiddle.

Keary has two more years to run on his current deal but the Roosters could face a roster squeeze given they have so many stars vying for only a few key positions.

Joseph Suaalii is too good to play on the wing, but there’s no way he’ll take James Tedesco’s fullback spot, even though he impressed for Samoa at the World Cup.

Then there’s Joseph Manu, who might just be the best player in the world after he took out the Golden Boot award.

He simply needs to get his hands on the ball as often as possible, which has led some to suggest he should play five-eighth, or at the very least continue with his roaming role in attack.

It’s a great headache for coach Trent Robinson to have, but at least he won’t have to worry about who his general is for the next few years.

“The Roosters have been awesome for me and I’m grateful every day to be part of this great club,” Walker said.

“I love the Roosters club and the people in it, so I’m stoked to extend my time here. From ‘Robbo’ and the coaches to the squad around me, I’m learning so much and I know this is where I’ll play my best footy.”
