After returning to training, South Sydney Rabbitohs star Latrell Mitchell has paid tribute to his teenage cousin after he died in a tragic crash.

Latrell Mitchell has paid tribute to his late cousin, who tragically died in a car crash on the weekend.

Mitchell’s 14-year-old cousin has been identified as one of the two teenagers killed in the horror northern NSW car crash.

Three others were in hospital after the tragic incident in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Emergency services were called to Plains Station Rd in Tabulam, 60km west of Casino, after hearing reports of a single-vehicle crash at 3:20am.

It is understood the Volkswagen Tiguan had lost control and smashed into a tree.

Two teenagers were declared dead at the scene by paramedics.

News Corp first reported one of those killed was Mitchell’s younger cousin.

The Sunday Telegraph reported Mitchell has been left shattered and woke to the news on Saturday morning.

But on Monday put on a brave face on his first day of South Sydney Rabbitohs pre-season training at Redfern Oval.

The star fullback was put through his paces with teammates and looked in good spirits alongside the likes of Cody Walker and Damien Cook.

Later on, Mitchell posted a photo of his cousin with angel wings to his Instagram story captioned: “Love ya my baby cuz” with a broken heart emoji.

The Rabbitohs star is said to be devastated by the tragic news of his cousin’s death and was given the option to push back his return to training if he needed time to look after his mental health.

But Mitchell attended training as the Rabbitohs look to bounce back from a disappointing 2023 campaign after missing finals despite being on top of the ladder after Round 11.

NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb said the horror car crash “a tragic waste of young life”.

NSW Police earlier confirmed details of the crash through a statement.

“Three teenagers were taken to hospital, with one in a serious condition while the two others are being treated for minor injuries,” a NSW Police spokesperson said.

Police have established a crime scene at the crash site as investigations get underway into how it occurred.

Specialist officers from the Crash Investigation Unit are examining the scene.

Plains Station Road remains closed in both directions with local traffic diversions in place.

Mitchell, meanwhile, on Sunday shared several photos and video of his off-season water sport adventures.

The South Sydney fullback loaded photos of him riding a jet ski and taking time out fishing on the water.

It comes after charges against the Rabbitohs star and Jack Wighton were sensationally dropped in an ACT court last week.

Dramatic footage showed Mitchell and Wighton were “targeted” by police and arrested n the early hours of February 5 in Canberra.

Wighton had been charged with contravening an exclusion direction and fighting in a public place.

He had been charged with resisting territory officials, fighting in a public place, and affray.

The prosecution’s argument came undone after CCTV footage from inside Fiction nightclub – where the duo and their friends had been celebrating Mr Wighton’s 30th birthday – failed to show the behaviour police had based their exclusion direction on.
