‘If I get another apology I won’t be happy’: Sheens fumes over no try

Tigers coach Tim Sheens says he won’t be happy if he receives an apology this week after a bunker call he can’t understand.

Tim Sheens has fumed at another crucial call going against the Tigers in their 34-18 loss to the Knights after Jahream Bula was ruled to have knocked on by the Bunker in the lead-up to a try for Tommy Talau.

The Tigers were awarded the first try of the game early, before the Bunker took it off them despite a lack of evidence to overturn the on-field decision and the Knights put on four tries after that to set up a match winning lead.

“We had a try disallowed, but it looked like a try to me,” Sheens said.

“But anyway then we were 18-0 in the next 15 minutes, so we fought back but we were chasing our tail the whole game.

“But I would be interested to see that. It looked like a try to me and if I get another apology from the referees I won’t be happy.

“Yeah it is (happening too often), but anyway we will see.”

Sheens had support from veteran commentators Greg Alexander and Michael Ennis who were convinced it was a try or at the very least should have stayed with the on-field decision.

“How could you take it off them when the on-field referee says knocked back try, which I thought it was a knock back,” Alexander said.

“How do you then overrule on the evidence presented? I couldn’t have taken that off them. I thought it was a rough call.”

“I agree it looked like Jahream Bula’s hands went backwards,” Ennis said.

“And it was the fact that the on-field referee said try. I don’t know how Gerard Sutton found a no try in that.

“I don’t know how he did. It astounds me sometimes how we just want to take tries off them.

“It was a devastating blow for the Tigers.”

However, Sheens refused to blame the tough referee decisions on his side’s place on the ladder.

“No I’m not going to go there,” Sheens said when asked if the bottom teams get tougher calls.

“We didn’t play well enough. We didn’t play smart enough. We didn’t play the game plan we planned.

“They were down to 12 men and we were doing hit ups, I mean please.

“Anyway it is easy to say it from the box. But we are lacking direction and we are not sticking to the game plan. The coaches are very unhappy about that I can tell you.

“If Jahream Bula doesn’t play tonight we get beat by 40. The guy is a freak.

“But if he has to do that all night. Like we got cut to pieces on the edges.”
