The North Queensland Cowboys pulled off a 19-18 win over the Canberra Raiders in a brutal clash in Townsville.

The Cowboys dominated the first half to get out to an 18-0 lead just before the break but Emre Guler gave the Raiders some hope as he crashed over just before the break.

While it was still 18-6 at the break, it left the door ajar and the Raiders turned the tables in the second half, locking the sides at 18-all in the 58th minute.

However, a Chad Townsend field goal in the 75th minute sealed a brutal win in sapping heat in North Queensland.

However, Guler’s try caught the attention of Andrew Voss as the veteran commentator called his haircut “an early candidate for worst haircut ever.”

With business in the front and plenty of party left in the back, it was definitely a statement from the 25-year-old.

Seconds after making those comments, Guler burst over the line to cut the lead to 12 at halftime and keep Canberra in the game.

“That has come from nowhere — I’m going to get myself one of those haircuts,” Voss said.

Corey Parker said: “You’ve put him in for one of the worst Yogi Bear you’ve seen?”

Voss joked: “The worst ever. I think it’s legal territory, if I came out of the barber with that, I’m suing.”

The off-season haircuts have caught the attention as Melbourne Storm halfback Jahrome Hughes called out his teammate Harry Grant for his haircut after the side’s golden point win over the Parramatta Eels on Thursday.

Locked at 12-all at the end of regular time, Grant won the game for the Storm, taking a scoot out of dummy half and diving over next to the posts.

But Hughes wasn’t about to give his teammate an ego boost, dropping a hilarious sledge on Triple M.

“He’s such a good player around that ruck, and our big boys laid a platform for him with quick play the balls and he just fed off that,” Hughes said on Triple M.

“I don’t want to blow his head up too big because his haircut’s really disgusting and he thinks it’s mad.”

Hilariously, the haircut was news in the Melbourne rooms as The Age’s Roy Ward revealed: “Craig Bellamy was happily giving Harry Grant a clip about his new haircut yesterday. Fair chance he will be giving him some love after that winning try. What a start to 2023.”
