Wantaway Dragons star Zac Lomax has pulled off one of the most absurd plays of the season in horrendous conditions at Newcastle’s Macdonald Jones Stadium.

While his side dropped to a 30-10 loss to the Knights in a ground that was more a puddle than a field, Lomax delivered one of the highlight reel plays of the season in setting up a try for captain Ben Hunt.

From the players running onto the field, every step saw water splashing in horrific scenes in Newcastle.

In the 21st minute, the Dragons chanced their arm to the right with Lomax seemingly having run out of room before the sideline as the Knights slid across.

He could have easily given up on the play, but threw an audacious pass behind his back, hitting Hunt 10m in to dive over the line untouched.

“Miraculous,” Dan Ginnane screamed on Fox League. “It’s play on, that’s the pass of the season.

“Zac Lomax has hurled it infield, Hunt is there and in diabolical conditions, that is simply extraordinary.

“How on earth did Zac Lomax do that?”

Michael Ennis agreed it was “extraordinary”.

“You know it’s something special when the opposition home crowd hushes and murmurs when they saw the replay,” Ginnane added.

On Channel 9, they were equally blown away.

“What have we just seen?” Mat Thompson said. “What have we just seen? Lomax has thrown it around his back and Ben Hunt has taken it and scored.”

Andrew Johns added: “No way.

“Thrown it behind his back? He’s thrown it 20m. It was a missile.

“He was dead set going to be put in the grandstand. That was freakish.”

Brad Fittler added: “He’s never played better. The guy isn’t going anywhere.

“Forget the conditions, for anyone to execute a pass of that magnitude is staggering,” Thompson said. “It’s left everyone flabbergasted — and then you throw the diabolical condition of the ground and that is one of the great plays by Zac Lomax.”

Even more impressive is that it came after a week where the Dragons granted Lomax a release from the final two years of his deal at the end of the season.

Reports have been flowing that Lomax wanted to play in the centres but has been a revelation on the wing for the struggling Dragons.

It’s been reported that the Eels are the frontrunners to snag the star’s signature, having met with coach Brad Arthur during the week, with a sticking point believed to be Lomax’s desire to box in the off-season.

Fans liked what they saw from the moment.

SEN producer Nathan Brookes tweeted: “All of Matt Gidley’s flick passes have nothing on that Zac Lomax belter. Holy s**t that was tasty!”

The Super Coach Whisperer commented: “Zac Lomax wants to move back to the centres …. But on form, the bloke would be wearing No. 5 for the Blues.”

The Red V podcast added: “That is outrageous!!!! Zac Lomax!!!”

Another fan posted: “Lomax low key a freak.”

Another said: “The Lomax to Hunt pass is an absolute thing of beauty.”

While the pass may have been the highlight reel play of the night, it did little to stop the home team, which piled on four unanswered tries from there to run away with the 30-10 win.
