Another week, another brutal loss for the St George Illawarra Dragons.

Since the club’s round 5 thrashing of the Dolphins, the Dragons have now lost a fourth straight match by less than a try.

A 18-16 loss to the Bulldogs comes after a two point loss to the Titans, a six-point defeat at the hands of the Raiders and a one-point heartbreaker against the Roosters on Anzac Day.

It sees the Dragons languishing in 15th on the ladder after two losses and a bye so far this season.

A sign of how close the Dragons have been is that with a record of 2-6, the side’s for and against is just -25.

But while the side has been tasting the bitter pill of defeat, it’s come at the worst possible time as the drums continue to beat against coach Anthony Griffin.

It seems more likely than not that Griffin’s time at St George Illawarra will come to an end after the current season, if not earlier.

Facing the media again after the game, Ben Hunt was again questioned over his support of Griffin, particularly after four straight losses.

“It was raised before a ball had even been kicked this season,” Hunt said, as the Dragons were tipped by some to take the wooden spoon.

But Griffin stepped in to deflect the question.

“I don’t think you need him to answer anything like that,” he said. “He’s answered that enough.”

The question has been asked constantly over the season, particularly after Griffin was forced to reapply for his

It come after Hunt had said he could look for another club if Griffin was moved on before the Raiders clash.

“(Griffin) has been here for a couple of years now and we are building in a direction I believe is the right direction,” he told reporters at the time.

“I believe if you take away your coach and bring a new coach in, it’s going to start that cycle again and to be honest I don’t have the time to start it all again.”

Four straight losses is far from where Hunt would have wanted to see the club.

The win was huge for the Bulldogs, who claimed their fourth win of the year and sit a win outside the top eight after nine rounds, despite a massive injury crisis.

Jake Averillo scored a brace for the Bulldogs, joined on the scoresheet by Corey Waddell who scored off his own deft grubber kick, while Illawarra local Toby Couchman and the Feagai brothers Mathew and Max scored for the Dragons.

Karlo Oloapu debuted for the Bulldogs, getting a full second half on the field and some nice touches in his first top-flight appearance.
