FORMER NRL player Shane Tronc has been charged with supplying dangerous drugs.

Tronc, 30, was issued last week with a notice to appear on the charge, allegedly steroids.

The former Brisbane Broncos and North Queensland Cowboys prop - he played in the 2005 NRL Grand Final for the Cowboys against the West Tigers - retired last year after succumbing to a recurring neck injury.

He is due to appear in the Townsville Magistrates Court on August 8.

Tronc began his career playing as a junior in Arana Hills, north of Brisbane.

However, it was North Queensland that gave him a shot at the big-time, when he was recruited by the Cowboys in 2004, making his NRL debut the next year.

In 2006, Tronc wed longtime girlfriend Amy Macdonald in a ceremony in Brisbane, welcoming the first of two children one year later.

Tronc had played 125 NRL games for the Cowboys and 22 for the Broncos club before he was forced to retire due to injury.

On the eve of his retirement in 2011, Broncos coach Anthony Griffin praised Tronc's skills and dedication to his sport.
