Former NRL player Michael Lichaa is fighting allegations that he assaulted his ex-partner after catching her in an ‘intimate act’ with an ex-teammate.
A concerned neighbour who made a triple-0 call to report a heated argument during which former NRL player Michael Lichaa is alleged to have assaulted his partner heard a man yelling “f---ing kill her”, a court has been told.
Mr Lichaa, 28, on Tuesday fronted Sutherland Local Court where he is fighting allegations that he assaulted his ex-fiancee Kara Childerhouse during a drunken late-night incident earlier this year.
Police have alleged that he was involved in a heated dispute with Ms Childerhouse that prompted concerned neighbours to call police to his Connells Point home in southern Sydney on the morning of February 14.
Police allege Ms Childerhouse was caught in an “intimate act” with Mr Lichaa’s former Bulldogs teammate Adam Elliott.
During a hearing on Tuesday, Ms Childerhouse gave her evidence in closed court.
Mr Lichaa was charged with common assault, destroying or damaging property and stalking/intimidate causing fear of physical harm.
He pleaded guilty to the destroy property charge however pleaded not guilty to the other two more serious charges.
Police have alleged that Mr Lichaa threatened his partner after he woke to find her with Mr Elliott following a party at their home.
The two footballers then allegedly had a fiery verbal confrontation.
Mr Lichaa’s barrister James Trevallion told the court that when officers arrived at the scene, Ms Childerhouse’s mother had told officers that “he said nothing happened, she said nothing happened”.
Police found Mr Lichaa with deep cuts to his arms and he was taken to hospital for surgery under police guard before being transported back to Kogarah police station for questioning. He was later charged.
The court was played tapes of the triple-0 calls made by concerned neighbours.
The court was told one woman who rang police reported she could “hear a man yelling at a woman” and that the man was saying he would “f---ing kill her”.
The court was told another woman told the operator she could “hear a man shouting very very loudly” as well as a “high-pitched woman’s voice”.
At one point on the call, raised voices could be heard over the phone despite the neighbour being across the road and in her own home.
A man rang police saying there was a “big commotion across the road” and could see “a guy yelling and screaming and swearing”.
Mr Lichaa made his NRL debut for Cronulla in 2014 before transferring to Canterbury during a 113-game career.
He was not offered a contract for the 2020 season.
The hearing before magistrate Melissa Humphreys will return to court in March next year.
