Eels’ Dylan Brown selected amid charges for ‘sexual touching’

Parramatta have made a big call on their star five-eighth after Dylan Brown was charged by police over the weekend.

The Parramatta Eels have selected Dylan Brown for the club’s Kings Birthday clash against the Canterbury Bulldogs on Monday.

But the NRL will consider whether to stand Brown down, as The Daily Telegraph reported: “It is understood the NRL was still discussing their stance on his immediate playing future on Tuesday afternoon.”

Brown was arrested over the weekend and charged with five counts of sexual touching.

Police have also taken out an interim apprehended violence order (AVO).

NSW Police have released a holding statement.

“About 11.40pm Saturday (3 June 2023), officers attached to Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command were called to a hotel on South Head Road, Double Bay, following a report of sexual touching,” the statement read.

“Officers arrested a 22-year-old man who was taken to Waverley Police Station.

“The man has been charged with sexually touch another person without consent.”

News Corp reports police will allege Brown groped a woman multiple times.

He was granted bail and will appear before Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday.

The NRL have a no-fault stand-down policy but Brown’s offences don’t reach the standard to automatically trigger the policy as the charges don’t carry a penalty of 12 years or more.

But NRL boss Andrew Abdo does have discretionary powers to stand Brown down and it’s believed a decision either way will he handed down later in the week.

The Eels released a statement when the team was announced, writing: “The NRL has given permission for Dylan Brown to be named in the team while they consider whether he is subject to the no fault stand down policy.

“We are continuing to work with the NRL Integrity Unit and NSW Police.”

In good news for the Eels, Reagan Campbell-Gillard has been named to make his return from a groin injury suffered against the Broncos in Round 8.

The Bulldogs have also picked Reed Mahoney, despite suffering a concussion over the weekend.

While he should be subject to a mandatory 11-day stand down, Canterbury argues he has no symptoms and no history of concussion.

He will only be cleared to play if declared fit by an NRL-appointed neurologist.

South Sydney will be without representative trio Cameron Murray, Latrell Mitchell and Jai Arrow through injury.

Titans enforcer David Fifita has also suffered delayed concussion symptoms and will miss Thursday’s clash with the Tigers, putting question marks over his place in the Maroons team.
