Storm superstar Cameron Munster dropped a bombshell earlier this week when he revealed his interest in joining the second Brisbane team when the competition is expanded to include a 17th club.

His Melbourne teammate Ryan Papenhuyzen, however, isn’t buying too much into it.

Papenhuyzen was asked on NRL 360 about Munster’s revelation and although the star fullback can see the appeal, he hosed it down pretty quickly.

“Munster doesn’t know what he’s doing tomorrow so I’ll leave that one with him,” he joked.

“But of course you’d want to come back up here as a Queenslander ... so we’ll joke about that and we’ll probably bag him out for coming out and saying that.”

Munster didn’t shy away from sharing his interest in an interview with The Courier Mail, opening up on the appeal of reuniting with former Queensland Origin coach Wayne Bennett — the man tipped to coach the expansion team.

“I know Wayne would be very keen to coach a second Brisbane team,” Munster said.

“He told me in Origin camp (last November) he is keen on a second Brisbane team, so it would be a very competitive side if Wayne was in charge.

“The Storm are a great club and they gave me my first opportunity to play NRL. I am a pretty loyal bloke and I will definitely give them an opportunity to keep me, but with the new Brisbane coming along, it will be a tough conversation to have.”

The 26-year-old would be a marquee player that is no doubt on the shopping list of each of the expansion team bids.

The three bids, Brisbane Jets, Brisbane Firehawks and Redcliffe Dolphins, all pitched their cases to the ARL commission on Monday. 2023 had been earmarked as the year the competition would be expanded, however there’s been talk that could be pushed back to 2024.

If the commission was to push on with 2023 it could leave Munster in a tricky position.

The Rockhampton born five-eighth is contracted to the Storm until the end of 2023 and could miss his opportunity if the expansion team is forced to chase another marquee half instead for that season.
