Cameron Munster’s touching move after family heartbreak
The rugby league star’s best ever season has been followed by a family tragedy, but he’s reacted with a heartwarming move.
As he prepares to carry his new mantle of rugby league’s most influential player into season 2021, Cameron Munster has been privately mourning the death of his longtime partner’s mother.
Bianca McMahon, who has been dating the Melbourne Storm and Queensland Maroons star for several years, recently lost her mum, Maria, to a cancer battle.
Bianca posted a touching family photo recently with the caption “always and forever”.
She’d regularly honoured her mum on her Instagram page, describing her as “her rock” and labelling her and her pilot brother Shane as “easily the luckiest kids in the world”.
Munster, who has rocketed to new levels of fame after winning the grand final and leading the Maroons to the Origin shield last year, responded to Maria’s battle by becoming a cancer ambassador.
“Sadly, his partner’s mum passed away recently from cancer and Cam wants to make a difference as an ambassador for Ovarian Cancer Australia,” his agent Shaun Pyne told the Courier Mail.
Munster spent most of last year either stuck in lockdown or in biosecurity bubbles. But he was fortunate to be based on the Sunshine Coast for part of the season, near Maria’s home.
“Luckily enough for me my partner’s mum and dad live down the road,” he revealed last October. “So I was getting them to wash my clothes every week.”
Munster thanked his partner Bianca McMahon for her ongoing support in a heartfelt Instagram post after winning Origin.
“Your support through everything this year has been second to none,” Munster wrote.
“You have your own problems and you flush them down the drain just to hear me whinge about my performances each and every week, not only having to put up with me 10 hours a day, so thank you.”
McMahon also congratulated Munster in late October following Melbourne’s 26-20 victory over the Penrith Panthers.
“What an unforgettable season, full of unforgettable memories, with a very special bunch of people we call family. I’m so proud of you,” McMahon posted to Instagram.
