Queensland star Cameron Munster is still haunted by the chilling look Storm captain Cameron Smith flashed him in the mad final minute of Melbourne’s Grand Final win.

Munster has revealed the secret exchange that occurred between the pair as the Storm were about to kick off for the final time in the Grand Final after a Nathan Cleary try in the 79th minute gave Penrith one final play to steal the NRL premiership.

Munster’s reveal on former NRL player Justin Horo’s podcast shows the truth of the dynamic between the Storm’s two biggest stars after years of rumours surrounding their relationship.

It is no secret Smith and Munster are the original odd-couple of the club with Smith being the polar-opposite to Munster’s famed larrikin, party-boy persona.

Their differences were never more obvious than in the final minute of Penrith’s hectic grand final comeback when Munster told his captain to surprise the Panthers with a short kick-off from the re-start.

The Panthers were coming with four tries in the second half, leaving the Storm hanging on for dear life after playmaker Jahrome Hughes had been sent to the sin bin.

The option would have given the Storm a chance of re-gaining possession — but it more likely would have given Penrith possession with only 60m to travel through a disorganised defensive line to score a try that would likely have sent the game to golden point.

Munster has revealed the look Smith gave him in response to his suggestion is the stuff of nightmares.

“You should have heard what I said to Smithy,” Munster began on the podcast.

“I told Smithy to go short. I thought it wasn’t a bad play.

“Just try to knock it out and get to the ball, so then you don’t give them time to shift the ball.

“Smithy looked and me and goes ‘What the f*** are you talking about?’

“And I went ‘oh yeah, nah nah, s*** idea, mate. Just kick it long.

“I almost s*** myself when he looked at me. He literally looked into my soul and said ‘mate, honestly get f***ed’.”

The Storm did eventually kick the ball long and stopped Penrith deep in their own half to win the Grand Final.

It’s hardly the first time Smith has put Munster in his place.

Just earlier this year, Smith’s reaction towards Munster at the end of a shock loss to Cronulla raised eyebrows across the game.

After Munster got caught in the final play of the game, Smith was filmed giving Munster some choice words before the star five-eighth kicked the ball away in frustration.

At the time Fox League NRL 360 host Paul Kent said it showed the brutal honesty that defines the at-times prickly relationship between Munster and Smith.

“Munster got tackled with the last play and the game is over, before Cameron Smith comes in and Munster boots the ball away,” Kent said in May.

“Paul Gallen said it is the first time he has seen this out of these guys and it surprised him.

“The Storm are often applauded for their frank honesty with each other.

“One of the most brutal things you can have is a Storm video session.

“They basically come in and tear strips off each other, but they have the maturity as a group to be able to say that the criticism is about making me a better player.

“I think that’s what that will get put down to and that’s great, but in saying that we don’t see that often.”

Smith has now gone away to think about his future and remains without a contract for the 2021 season, while Munster has sprung back to life from his wild week of grand final celebrations with teammates to help Queensland pull off one of the biggest upsets in State of Origin history in the series opener in Adelaide.
