Storm star Cameron Munster has revealed he does not speak to super-coach Wayne Bennett, and hasn’t since the star five-eighth turned down a monster contract offer from the Dolphins — eventually re-signing with Melbourne on a five-year extension.

As the dust settled, Bennett called out Munster for not contacting him personally to inform him of his decision, and relations between the pair have been frosty ever since.

In an interview with Storm legend Billy Slater, Munster got deep on the contract offer from the Dolphins, which would have made him the highest-paid player in the sport.

“I haven’t really spoken to (Bennett) yet,” Munster said.

“It’s still an open wound, still fresh for not only him but the Dolphins in general,” he said.

“I’m sure they will beat it up in whatever round we have the Dolphins this year.

“It was a decision I made.

“I will stand by it.

“No regrets whatsoever.

“It would have been nice to be a foundation player, but it is something I have to live with, I will do that and (I knew) whatever team I play for I will do everything I can to make it a good one.”

Munster, in a rare moment of honesty in interviews such as these, acknowledged the impact he had on his family in turning down the money.

“It was (a hard decision).

“It was hard for my family.

“Obviously the money that was being thrown around, I don’t think I will ever make that money ever again.”

Bennett found out that he had missed out on his prized signing via the media, incensing the legendary coach.

He described the developments as “pretty ordinary stuff”, despite Munster saying in previous interviews that the decision to not ring Bennett was his manager’s decision.

“I asked my manager if it was an alright decision to call (Bennett) before (the news) leaked, before I jumped on a plane (for the World Cup),” Munster said at the time.

“And he said ‘Nah, wait until it has leaked’.

“And by the time that all came about, I was already in the UK (for the World Cup).

“I did have the right intentions to ring him straight after I landed but, after seeing the comments that he came out with, I felt like it was pretty disappointing, and I had a little bit of animosity towards it. That’s one of the reasons why I have decided not to ring him.

“I had every right and every respect to ring him, and I should have, but I just didn’t like the way they went about it.”
