Forward Mitchell Dodds took part in Brisbane's training run yesterday and has been placed on standby for Lui, whose ailment does not appear too serious after he also completed a final session at Red Hill.

Broncos coach Anthony Griffin will decide today whether to play Lui against Wayne Bennett's misfiring Knights, who run on to Suncorp languishing in 11th spot with a 4-7 win-loss record.

"Dunamis has been crook all week with a stomach bug," Griffin said yesterday.

"He's coming good now, it's something we've been struggling with a bit. Josh Hoffman had it a bit and he is a couple of kilos lighter than his playing weight.

"We'll just keep an eye on Lui and see how he pulls up (today)."

While the Knights are under pressure to stay in touch with the top eight, Griffin said the second-placed Broncos could hardly be complacent after slumping to their third consecutive loss last week against Melbourne.

"We had some good form a month ago but at the moment we're not where we need to be," Griffin said.

"I'm not really worried too much about Newcastle. I know what to expect. They will be desperate as I'd expect we will be.

"We're just concentrating purely on ourselves and making sure our effort is better than what is was last week.

"Last weekend was not acceptable for all of us, the way we competed in that game ... we need to get back to earning everything we want to achieve.

"The effort is vital and if the effort is there, we might get some points out of the game."
