Broncos dream comes true with Reece Walsh set to become $6 million man

The Broncos have reportedly pulled off one of the greatest retention campaigns of all time before their season kicks off.

Reece Walsh is reportedly set to agree to a new contract extension that will keep him at the Broncos until the end of the 2029 NRL season.

The gun fullback was already signed with the club on a long-term deal, but he has now been offered the richest deal in the history of the club in order to stop rival clubs from sniffing around.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports the Broncos are ready to table a five-year, $6 million deal after Walsh emerged as one of the biggest stars in the league in 2023.

Walsh is the final domino left to fall in the Broncos’ extraordinary recruitment drive with the club also locking in five-eighth Ezra Mam, halfback Adam Reynolds and prop Payne Haas.

According to reports last month, the Broncos and Walsh’s management had been discussing a $4 million deal, but it appears the club has been prepared to up the offer.

Broncos legend Corey Parker in November called for the club to make Walsh the highest paid player in the club’s history.

“I think they have to pay Reece Walsh a million bucks and probably more actually,” Parker said to News Corp.

“He should be the highest-paid player at the Broncos... It’s not just his talent on the field, it’s his marketing value off it.

“It’s simply unbelievable the impact he has had on the Broncos on and off the field.”

The Broncos have in some ways been able to beat the salary cap by holding onto arguably all four of their most important players, but the club hasn’t been able to keep everyone.

The Broncos lost Herbie Farnworth and Tom Flegler to the Dolphins before veteran forward Kurt Capewell made a sudden move to the Broncos this summer.
