EX-BRISBANE Broncos young gun Dane Gagai will rebuild his career under master coach Wayne Bennett after signing with Newcastle Knights.

It is understood the Bennett factor was key in Gagai signing a deal that will run until the end of 2014.

The Knights beat interest from a host of clubs including Queensland Reds, Canberra Raiders, Canterbury Bulldogs and North Queensland Cowboys.

Gagai, 21, will be an excellent acquisition for the Knights, who have lost three games in a row and arrive in Brisbane this week to face the Broncos on Sunday.

Gagai, a fullback, winger or centre, was cut loose by the Broncos early this month for repeated ill-discipline.

His breaches were all minor, but they threatened to derail the Broncos' excellent club culture.

Gagai told The Courier-Mail he was confident of resurrecting his NRL career and described his Broncos axing as a timely wake-up call.

He admitted he was slightly disappointed to be overlooked by Broncos coach Anthony Griffin when Jharal Yow Yeh suffered a season-ending ankle injury.

"I haven't lost passion for the game," he said.

"It (attitude) is something I need to work on and it's the kick in the backside I definitely needed.

"There was nothing in particular, but what has happened is something I will learn from and become a better player.

"I was disappointed to miss out on Jharal's spot."
