For the first time in NRL history, the Gold Coast Titans have defeated the Brisbane Broncos twice in a calendar year.

During Saturday’s clash at Cbus Super Stadium on the Gold Coast, the Broncos crumbled to a humiliating 18-6 defeat, their ninth consecutive loss. It’s the first time in the club’s 32-year history they have achieved the unwanted streak.

Experienced fullback Darius Boyd dived over in the sixth minute to give Brisbane an early lead, but the struggling club were unable to muster a point for the remaining 74 minutes of the one-sided encounter.

A flurry of unforced errors plagued the Broncos throughout the round 18 match. Brisbane were trailing by six points when young gun David Fifita was granted the perfect opportunity to score just before halftime, but the forward fumbled the footy inches above the turf.

After Gold Coast centre Young Tonumaipea scored his club’s third try of the day from a 90-metre team effort, the Broncos never looked like making a comeback.

With only one win since the coronavirus lockdown, Brisbane remain a strong contender to claim the wooden spoon this season. A spectator was spotted holding a sign from the stands which read: “Broncos, Queensland’s shame.”

Meanwhile, the Titans are officially the best Queensland club in the NRL — after recording their seventh victory of the season, they will end the 2020 premiership above their two state rivals on the ladder.

Gold Coast have also won three consecutive matches for the first time since 2017.

Queensland legend Mal Meninga told Fox League: “Terrific effort … their defence was tremendous today. A lot of second efforts, a lot of scrambling defence.

“The try they scored in that second half from their end of the field was fantastic. That’s the type of footy you want to see.”

Coming off the bench, forward Jai Arrow managed 126 metres, two tackle busts, a linebreak assist and a try assist for the Titans.

Next weekend, the Broncos will face the Parramatta Eels at Bankwest Stadium, while the Titans will take on the Manly Sea Eagles at Brookvale Oval.
