Brent Naden signs for the West Tigers in bombshell mid-season switch
Bulldogs winger Brent Naden has stunned the NRL community by signing for a rival club the day after Trent Barrett’s resignation.
Canterbury Bulldogs winger Brent Naden has stunned the rugby league community by signing for the West Tigers on a two-year deal less than 48 hours after Trent Barrett’s resignation.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Bulldogs confirmed that Naden has been granted a release from his two-year contract, effective immediately.
“Brent requested a release to join the Tigers and we have agreed to that,” Bulldogs chief executive Aaron Warburton said in a statement.
“We thank Brent for his efforts while here at the Bulldogs and wish him all the best.”

The announcement comes one day after Bulldogs footy boss Phil Gould informed the playing roster that Barrett had quit as head coach, with high performance manager Dan Ferris parting ways with the club soon after.
Naden, who represented the Indigenous All Stars this year, had a close relationship with Barrett, who served as Panthers assistant coach during his time at Penrith.
Meanwhile, the Tigers revealed the 26-year-old had been named in the reserves for this weekend’s match against the Bulldogs.
“Brent is a quality player and will be a welcome addition to the group of players we already have at the club,” Tigers coach Michael Maguire said in a statement.
“It’s exciting for Brent and for our playing group.”
For Brent Naden to already be registered to play for the Wests Tigers barely 24 hours after Trent Barrett left the Bulldogs as coach says a lot. Must have been straight on the phone.

Pretty funny that Brent Naden was named by the Tigers against the Bulldogs on the official #NRL website (including being in the ins and outs sections of both teams) and it took everyone 16 minutes to realise 𤣠pic.twitter.com/nn1RrWDxQo

Naden played eight games for the Bulldogs this season, including Friday’s loss to the Newcastle Knights in Brisbane, scoring a try during Canterbury’s Round 6 loss to the South Sydney Rabbitohs.
There are growing concerns that high-profile recruits Matt Burton, Viliame Kikau and Reed Mahoney will also jump ship and backflip on their Bulldogs contracts.
News Corp reporter Dave Riccio told Fox League’s NRL 360 on Tuesday evening that Bulldogs prop Jack Hetherington “has been given permission to leave the club”.
“It is just the beginning,” rugby league journalist Paul Kent continued.
“Their strength and conditioning coach, Dan Ferris has also been let go and Steve Hansen, who was an adviser to Barrett, has come out and given the Dogs a serve so it’s unlikely he’ll return.
“There’s going to be a bit of a clean-out now with the roster.
“I heard an interesting thing Phil Gould say last night that come 2024 there will only be five or six of the current roster under contract so there’ll be a lot of space in the cap.
“I don’t know who those players are, we’ll have to start getting on the phones to figure out who they are and how accurate that number is because that is a lot of players who are on their way out of the club.
“I assume some of those players are contracted and just haven’t been told the news that they may not be there.”
Naden will potentially face his former teammates at Leichhardt Oval on Friday evening, with kick-off scheduled for 6pm AEST.
