Big names return, injuries wreak havoc and ref pays price for series of bad calls

Team list Tuesday has once again thrown up plenty of surprises, with several big names set to return and one club rocked by injuries.

There are mass changes on and off the field for Round 12 with a coach sacked, a referee dropped and some huge inclusions for teams who desperately need a win.

The big news is at the Dragons, where interim coach Ryan Carr has recalled Zac Lomax and Jacob Liddle after the pair dominated in a stirring comeback win in reserve grade last week.

Jacob Liddle was bizarrely dropped after he signed a contract extension, but he’s set to return to the NRL this week.

Liddle slots straight back into the starting side, with veteran Moses Mbye dropped to the reserves, while there’s a slight change in the forwards, with Jack Bird moving from lock to the back row.

Carr’s first game in charge comes against a Roosters side on the slide and which will be without Golden Boot winner Joseph Manu after he limped off with an ankle injury last week.

This has forced a reshuffle in the halves with Luke Keary shifting to five-eighth and Drew Hutchison the new No.7, with young gun Sam Walker (knee) also unavailable.

The Roosters aren’t the only team in desperate need of a win, with the Sea Eagles calling on the returning cavalry in a bid to save their season.

Josh Schuster is finally back at five-eighth for just his fourth game of the season as Manly looks to fix its misfiring attack, while there’s a triple boost with Tom, Jake and Ben Trbojevic all named to play.

Jake’s return from a calf injury is a timely one given Kelma Tuilagi (facial fracture) is set to miss at least a month, while veterans Josh Aloiai (shoulder) and Aaron Woods (fractured thumb) are also out for up to six weeks.

The Sea Eagles take on the red-hot Raiders who will be without Zac Woolford (concussion) but they do get Danny Levi back from a broken jaw, with the veteran rake set to return off the bench.

Gerard Sutton will referee that game but he won’t be in the bunker this week after several poor calls in the game between the Storm and the Broncos.

That match has also cost Todd Smith, with the young referee relegated to sideline duties in Round 12.

Indigenous Round kicks off in Brisbane on Thursday night, where the Broncos will be without skipper Adam Reynolds after he landed heavily on his neck against the Storm.

The club has decided to play it safe this week with Jock Madden filling in at halfback against a Panthers side which will be without Spencer Leniu after he ruptured a testicle at training.

There’s mixed news for the struggling Eels, with halfback Mitch Moses back from his mandatory concussion layoff, but they will be without Shaun Lane for at least six weeks as he recovers from a serious hamstring injury.

Bryce Cartwright will start in the back row against the ladder leaders, who will be without Tom Burgess after he was a late scratching last week due to back spasms.

Cronulla’s forward crisis continues with Cameron McInnes sidelined with a broken hand while Siosifa Talakai remains out with a neck injury.

But there is some good news, with Oregon Kaufusi back on deck after missing the win over Manly due to illness, while Braden Hamlin-Uele has been named in the reserves and is a chance to return from his knee injury.

The Storm has received a boost with man mountain Nelson Asofa-Solomona named despite suffering a rib injury last week. That’s music to the ears of his former teammates who have a point to prove at the Dolphins.

Hitman Felise Kaufusi and the Bromwich brothers will face their former side for the first time, but they’ll be without fan favourite Valynce Te Whare, after the boom centre was relegated to the reserves despite starring at Magic Round on debut.

And the Bulldogs get Josh Addo-Carr back after last week’s false start, while teen sensation Karl Oloapu will make his first start in the halves, with Josh Reynolds moving back to the bench.
