Benji Marshall makes shock Lachlan Galvin call after Easter Monday loss to the Eels

The NRL world has been stunned by the Tigers’ shock Lachlan Galvin move a week on from the youngster informing the club of his desire to leave.

Just one week after Benji Marshall dropped wantaway star Lachlan Galvin to NSW Cup, the Wests Tigers coach has backflipped on his decision and has decided to pick him for their Round 8 clash with the Sharks.

A 38-22 loss to the Eels on Monday has reportedly convinced the 40-year-old to reconsider his position and recall him to the side.

Galvin, who has taken legal action against the club accusing them of bullying and providing an unsafe work environment, is somewhat of a shock inclusion given that many expected him to play in reserve grade for the remainder of his time at the joint venture club.

Galvin has been heavily scrutinised since turning down a massive $6 million contract extension from the Tigers.

The NRL prodigy signed with the Tigers ahead of the 2024 season and made his first-grade debut that year, with Marshall putting his trust in the teenager.

Since then he has gone on to make 27 appearances for the club, including the first six matches this season.

But he was exiled to reserve grade last week after the club felt blindsided by his decision to leave the club at the end of 2026, with Galvin citing he felt it was best for his development to leave the Tigers.

And in explaining his decision to drop Galvin to the NSW Cup, Marshall said he felt it was “the best thing for the team this week”.

Marshall revealed at the time he consulted senior players and the unanimous decision was for him not to play first-grade last weekend.

Teammates Jarome Luai and Sunia Turuva then took to social media with posts that were widely interpreted as criticisms of Galvin.

However, his time in the wilderness is already over with the 19-year-old reinstated as Jarome Luai’s halves partner after meetings at Concord on Tuesday between senior figures at the club determined it was best for everyone for him to return to the first-grade fold.

And while the move has seemingly caught everyone off guard, the NRL world was divided about the decision.

“This is the right move. a) for team performance right now and b) to salvage what we can out of this situation. If we can leverage releasing Galvin in 2026 to get a good player released to us then at least that’s something. Letting him go now gets us nothing,” one fan wrote on X in response to the news.

While another wrote. “This is bizarre. The other players now want to play with Galvin? Or is Benji now ignoring what the other players want? Either way, this would be a terrible decision.”
