JARRYD Hayne’s NFL future will be revealed in just four weeks’ time.
According to Detriot Free Press reporter Dave Birkett, Hayne is on the verge of signing a futures contract with a club believed to be the Detroit Lions, although the former league star has attracted interest from a number of franchises.
“It’s in the holding pattern right now,” Birkett said of Hayne signing a deal.
“It’s going to happen in the next month or so. There are a number of teams that are interested. His agent told me a couple of weeks ago that basically he could get the paper work done whenever he needed to get it done, and they were kind of just waiting for the NFL coaching carousel to sort itself out.
“It is just a matter of time before Jarryd signs with an NFL team.”
The 26-year-old caught the eye of a number of clubs having impressed during his time training in the United States late last year.
The former league star has toured numerous facilities but the Lions appear to be the most likely option with their General Manager Martin Mayhew publicly stating that he is intrigued by Hayne’s natural athletic ability.
While the Dally M medal winner is considered a raw talent in NFL terms, Hayne is a strong chance of making a practise squad for prospects a team believes it can develop into a future NFL star.
“The Lions General Manager has acknowledged that they are interested in signing him,” Birkett said.
“Jarryd’s had two visits to the Lions. The Lions are considered the favourite to land him.
“They have a need at the position he would play, running back, and a way for him to earn a roster spot. And essentially what happens is in April all NFL teams across the league open up their off-season workouts and those workouts go on for about three months.
“Jarryd would take part in those workouts and the workouts are generally gradually increased in intensity before a mini-camp happens in June and training camp in July, and we won’t know if he is going to make an NFL roster until the end of August.”
Since returning to Australia during the holidays, Hayne has resumed his training regimen in Sydney and will continue to do so until he officially signs a deal and can return to America.
