World Cup 2023: Diamonds captain applauds Fox Netball decision to show all Aussie games on Kayo Freebies

The Diamonds have thrown their support behind a decision from broadcaster Foxtel to show their matches for free as they bid for a 12th title in Cape Town.

Diamonds captain Liz Watson has lauded the decision of Fox Netball to showcase all World Cup games on Kayo Freebies as a win for the sport after the Foxtel Group secured broadcast right to the world’s premier netball event.

As well as showing every game live on Fox Sports, all Diamonds games plus the semi-finals and finals will be available live and free via Kayo Freebies, with minis – highlight packages – available shortly after the final whistle for Diamonds games as well as the semis and medal finals.

“I think to have family and friends that can’t get (to Cape Town), but then obviously the wider netball community – it’s one of our biggest events for netball, if not the biggest event – so to have it free and people able to watch it at any time, it’s really exciting and just showcases the best comp and the best players in the world going at it,” Watson said.

Most of Australia’s preliminary games will be in friendly time zones, starting at either 5pm or 7pm AEST, with the Diamonds filling morning slots in South Africa.

The semi-finals could also be at a fan-friendly time depending on Australia’s seeding into the game, while the final – the Diamonds have never missed the decider at either the World Cup or Commonwealth Games – will be early on the morning of August 7 (AEST).

Fox Netball commentators Madi Browne and Sue Gaudion will head to Cape Town for the coverage, supported by a strong team at the Fox Netball studio in Artarmon, including host Hannah Hollis and former Diamonds Cath Cox, Kim Green and Caitlin Bassett.

Browne, who with Watson is the only two-time winner of Australian netball’s highest individual honour, the Liz Ellis Diamond, said it was great that Fox Netball would have a presence at the tournament.

“We want eyeballs on our incredible players that play for the Diamonds,” Browne said.

“It’s obviously a world tournament, we’re on the world stage and I have no doubt that the Diamonds will be there during those semi-finals and final stages.”

Browne, who was also part of the team that broadcast the Quad Series in Cape Town, shown on Fox Netball in January, said it was a privilege to be on the ground for the historic event.

“They were hoping for an 80 per cent female broadcast crew or whole production crew and I think they’ve got well and truly over 90 per cent in the workforce over there,” she said.

“So it’s going to be not only a big occasion in South Africa but a historic event to have so many incredible women across every job role being showcased in this tournament, so it’s really exciting and a privilege to be part of it.”
