Fever confirms captain won't be back in 2024

The Melbourne Mavericks have vowed to “ do things our own way” after locking in the name, logo and colours of the newest team in Super Netball.

The Mavericks replace the defunct Collingwood Magpies who withdrew from the competition at the end of a tumultuous 2023 season.

New coach Tracey Neville said the name “means business” and the new team did as well.

“The thought process behind our new brand is awesome, it has impact, sells our story and speaks loudly about the staff and players we want to attract to be part of our family,” she said.

“The brand means business and so do we as a new franchise.”

Mavericks netball operations general manager Shae Bolton-Brown said the new team, which will be based in Melbourne’s southeast, wanted to be “bold” in their approach on and off the court.

“We couldn’t be more excited to launch our brand and strongly believe the Mavericks name reflects who we are as a team on the court but also overall as a club,” she said.

“We want to be bold and take the game in an exciting direction that appeals to existing and new netball fans. We are respectful but ambitious to do things our own way, united by admiration of our athletes’ skill and strength.”

Netball Australia chief executive Kelly Ryan said the arrival of the eighth team marked a “new chapter” for the competition.

“The Mavericks will write a new chapter in the story of Suncorp Super Netball as it continues to go from strength to strength as the world’s best netball competition,” she said.

“Today’s announcement gives fans a name to get behind and is the next step forward in getting the team ready for next season.”
