Super Netball 2020: Giants star Caitlin Bassett keen to celebrate her 200th game in style

Caitlin Bassett’s 200th game has given the Giants more reason to win for the first time this season when they meet West Coast Fever.

THE Giants have extra incentive to kickstart their Super Netball campaign on Tuesday night as they bid to ensure Caitlin Bassett is a winner in her 200th national league match.

Back-to-back losses to begin their 2020 season has the Giants desperate to open their account against West Coast Fever at Nissan Arena.

Throw in Bassett’s big occasion, and avoiding a hat-trick of losses is a must for the Giants.

“Milestone or not, we need to get the win,” Bassett said.

“That’s going to be the thing that’s on my mind the most.

“We can’t afford to have another loss. We’ve got to get our season back on track and I think we’re primed and ready to go for the win.

“It’s been challenging so far but no doubt we will start hitting our straps.”

It’s fitting that Bassett’s 200th game is against the Fever.

The Diamonds captain rose to prominence in Western Australia playing for the Fever, who were previously known as the Perth Orioles.

“It’s funny how it’s worked out like that,” the 32-year-old goal shooter said.

“To play against Fever and have some familiar faces playing against me is great.

“It would have been great to have played this game in Sydney and had some friends and family there, but I know all the (Giants) girls in the orange are going to be doing their best to make sure it’s a win.”

Bassett left the Fever after the 2016 season to join new club Sunshine Coast Lightning, where she won successive championships in 2017 and 2018 before moving to Sydney to link with the Giants, another of competition’s new teams.

“To head to the Sunshine Coast originally was a really tough decision but it paid off,” she said.

“Now playing for (the Giants) it’s what can impact and impart on my teammates.

“I’m very experienced by now so I really enjoy chatting with the younger girls and passing on as much knowledge as possible.”
