Jacques Villeneuve keen on full-time drive

EX-FORMULA One world champion Jacques Villeneuve is using this weekend's V8 Supercars appearance in Townsville as a possible audition for a full-time drive.

The 1997 F1 champion is in far north Queensland as a replacement driver for injured New Zealand veteran Greg Murphy, who is recovering from back surgery.

It's the second time Villeneuve has headed down under to race V8s, having been one of several international co-drivers at the 2010 Gold Coast event.

And the 41-year-old, who also counts the 1995 Indianapolis 500 among his career victories, said any offer would be one to consider.

"I would definitely be keen to discuss racing in V8 Supercars full-time," the Canadian said.

"I love Australia, it's a great place and there are some big events and challenging circuits in this championship."

Villeneuve is racing in Townsville with the Kelly Racing outfit run by brothers Todd and Rick Kelly.

And he believes the team's looming switch to become Nissan's factory-backed V8 Supercars outfit from next year is an opportunity he'd love to be part of.

"Todd and Rick have also got a lot going on for next year when they become the factory Nissan team," he said.

"It's going to take their team to the next level, no doubt. In all forms of racing, manufacturer support makes a big difference."

Villeneuve also dismissed fears from veteran Russell Ingall that his inexperience could prove costly for other drivers this weekend, though he isn't going to take it easy.

"I race hard and I will be pushing hard this weekend," he said.

"If you don't give it your all, then you are not going to be successful."
