‘This sport s***s me’: Supercars chaos in Darwin mega-crash

Qualifying for the Supercars Darwin Triple Crown saw a huge crash that affected a total eight cars and left one driver absolutely fuming.

There were wild scenes on Saturday when a major crash turned the Supercars qualifying for the Darwin Triple Crown into absolute chaos.

The pileup involved eight cars in total — three became tangled up and got stuck, while another five were pushed off the track at turn one of Hidden Valley Raceway.

Mark Winterbottom slid wide after losing power, leaving the door open for Shane van Gisbergen to take advantage and go into the lead.

But Winterbottom clipped van Gisbergen, and Scott Pyke collided into the back of Anton De Pasquale.

And when the safety car was deployed for six laps, Winterbottom was fuming at what had happened.

“This sport sh**s me sometimes,” he was heard saying on the Fox Sports coverage.

Five-time Supercars champion Mark Skaife couldn’t believe his eyes as the carnage folded.

“Shane dives, straight down the inside! Can he hold onto it? He’s been hit, Pyke’s turned him around,” Skaife said on commentary.

“That is absolute chaos.

“Anton gone, they’ve all crashed into each other. Wow, what a start!”

The crash also involved Todd Hazelwood, his teammate Jack Smith, as well as Team Sydney pair Fabian Coulthard and Garry Jacobson.

Later on, Chaz Mostert claimed his second win of the season in the opening race of the weekend.

“Starting eighth, I was just hoping I’d get through Turn 1,” said Mostert, who wiped 56 points off the deficit to van Gisbergen.

“I lucked into coming out of Turn 1 in third. I thought it was a good result, and hopefully the car was okay.

“I was pretty quick at the start... you get a bit worried that the degradation is going to come.

“I didn’t know about Shane, I didn’t know what happened, to be honest.

“We’ll take ‘em when you can get ‘em, I’ve been on the other side plenty of times.”
