Dale Wood has been seen in tears after being given an apology by Zane Goddard over the incident that has stunned Bathurst.

Wood, the co-driver of Andre Heimgartner, was knocked out of the race when he was speared by Goddard as the Snowy River Racing driver skidded across the track out of control.

Wood and Matt Campbell, the co-driver for David Reynolds, both crashed out of the race as a result of contact from Goddard, the co-driver of James Courtney, at The Cutting on Lap 5.

Campbell was assessed by medical staff after the incident after reporting he had pain in his ankles, groin, neck and wrists. Wood and Goddard were not injured in the incident, which is being investigated by marshalls.

Heimgartner was fuming after the incident, saying: “It’s like these people don’t realise it’s 161 laps and they’re driving like absolute losers. Hopefully they get their s*** together,” he said.

Wood’s feelings were much more raw and he was seen being consoled by family members.

“This whole build-up is about this one moment, going racing,” he said.

“I felt like we had a very good opportunity with this team and for it to be over so soon, it’s gutting. This is what you wait all year for, this is what you work towards, for it to be over so soon, I’m absolutely spewing.”

Goddard owned up to his blunder and extended an official apology.

“It’s super s*** on my part. It’s not really acceptable,” he said.

“I’m pissed off at myself. I owe the team a big apology. I owe Dave a big apology. Dave and his team, all their teams.

“It’s completely my fault. Once I was on the grass there was nothing I could do. It’s just a shame that I pinched it. It’s my bad.”

The incident was the third time the safety car came out onto the track inside the first 17 laps.

Veteran Greg Murphy couldn’t understand all the aggressive moves so early in the race.

He said: “What’s everyone doing? Are they trying to win it in the first stint? No-one’s learned. Amazing. It’s just madness, complete madness.”

Goddard was absolutely slammed by commentators over the incident.

Mark Skaife said on Fox Sports: “Seriously you can’t rejoin out of control like that”.

Neil Crompton said: “That is dead-set ordinary.”
