‘Disgusted’ Supercars star wants abusive fans banned for life

Supercars star Chaz Mostert has called on abusive fans to be banned from the sport following backlash to a controversial decision.

Supercars star Chaz Mostert has called for fans found to have engaged in online trolling to be banned from attending the sport for life.

The reigning Bathurst 1000 champion’s comments came in defence of Supercars driving standards advisor Craig Baird, the equivalent of F1’s race director, after he made a controversial call in last weekend’s race in Perth.

Baird handed Ford’s Cam Waters a five-second time penalty for exceeding track limits, which ultimately cost the Tickford driver victory in race 11 of the championship.

Waters went wide off the track during a duel with DJR’s Will Davison, who had passed Waters earlier at Turn 7 with an impressive late overtake.

But even though Waters crossed the finish line first, he was demoted to fourth because of the time penalty.

The decision was criticised by championship leader Shane van Gisbergen, who believed a redress, where drivers swap positions, would have been fairer — rewarding Davison for his pass and still allowing Waters to fight for the race win.

The time penalty was labelled “bullsh*t” by Tickford team boss Tim Edwards.

“Clearly Will drove him off the track,” Edwards told Fox Sports.

“We’re always going to have a difference of opinion, but there’s two sides to that. He should not have got a five-second penalty, it’s bullsh*t.”

In a lengthy social media post, Mostert rallied behind Baird and slammed trolls who had targeted the driving standards advisor online.

“After an awesome weekend back racing in WA (even with some hard results for me and my team) I find there is a much bigger issue continuing, if not growing in the background, with our beloved sport supercars which also reflects in to our day to day whole world outside of sport which is so concerning for now and next generation of people,” the 29-year-old wrote.

“In this world and in every sport there will be controversial moments where people will sit on either side of the fence that’s just life.

“But what gives you the right as a person to target someone and throw aggression/hate and even threats to another person and to top it off towards someone you personally don’t even know!

“And even if you did know them it still doesn’t give you the right to do this publicly in person or on any social media platform, what kind of example are you setting for the next generation — I think a pretty awful one.

“I am disgusted that this has happened after the weekend towards someone I personally think that does the hardest job to create the hardest and fairest racing out there for everyone’s entertainment.

“To clarify I’m not against people having opinions that’s always fair but I’m against peoples opinions when it’s aggressive hatred and threatening.”

Mostert called on Supercars to act so online trolls are banned from attending events “for periods of lifetime” and prohibited from following the sport’s social media channels as well.

“What’s next? I call on our sport to step up and make people accountable for their actions,” he said.

“People naming and shaming is not the go because it opens a platform for more hatred towards a hater, which I believe two wrongs don’t make a right, but what I do call for is make these people receive bans for periods or lifetime if it must be from attending our events and banned from following our sport’s socials, because in this world there is no room for hatred I really hope other drivers feel the same and also our sport.

“I stand for Bairdo.”

Mostert’s post was met with overwhelming support from the Australian motorsport community, with several drivers voicing their agreement.

Davison commented: “Well done Chazzie, perfectly said.”

Mostert is fifth in the championship, 342 points behind van Gisbergen, who is striving for his third Supercars title. Davison is currently third overall, ahead of Waters in fourth.
