Supercars: Your ultimate guide to the 2024 Bathurst 1000 at Mount Panorama

Start your engines. It’s time for the biggest race of the Supercars season – the Bathurst 1000 at Mount Panorama. Here is your ultimate guide to the 2024 edition of the Great Race.

Who will be crowned the King of the Mountain in 2024?

After the move of three-time Bathurst 1000 champion Shane van Gisbergen to NASCAR, his co-driver Richie Stanaway will be the only representative of Triple Eight’s 2023 winning pair at Mount Panorama this year.

Stanaway is now at Grove Racing, while Supercars series leader Will Brown is targeting a maiden Bathurst 1000 and a championship crown in van Gisbergen’s place at Triple Eight.

Brown holds a 189-point lead heading into the Great Race ahead of Ford rival and two-time Bathurst 1000 champion Chaz Mostert after his win in the Sandown 500 alongside co-driver Scott Pye.

Brown and Pye will now head to Mount Panorama as favourites after their Sandown victory to kick off the Supercars’ endurance campaign.

This year’s Bathurst field will feature two wildcards, headlined by seven-time Bathurst 1000 champion Craig Lowndes alongside young gun Cooper Murray.

Three-time Supercars champion Shane van Gisbergen became the first driver in 15 years to claim consecutive Bathurst 1000 wins in a stunning send-off to the Great Race before his move Stateside.

In his final campaign at Mount Panorama before he made the switch to NASCAR in 2024, van Gisbergen underlined his status as a champion of the sport to become a three-time Bathurst 1000 winner after triumphing with fellow Kiwi Richie Stanaway.

Upstaging the pole sitter and race favourite Brodie Kostecki, van Gisbergen became the first driver since Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup completed their three-peat in 2008 to win consecutive races in the endurance classic to take another slice of Mount Panorama history.

After his scorching top-10 shootout performance on Saturday, Kostecki secured his second Bathurst 1000 podium after he and co-driver David Russell finished second.

Dick Johnson Racing driver Anton De Pasquale defied a week of Ford parity drama to put his Mustang on the podium in third place after late heartbreak for Triple Eight young gun Broc Feeney.

The 2023 Sandown 500 winner had been on track for a podium behind teammate van Gisbergen before suffering a gear shift lever issue on lap 137.

Van Gisbergen defied his own late car niggles to add to his Bathurst wins in 2020 and 2022 – both alongside Garth Tander.

Every session of the Bathurst 1000 will be broadcast live on Fox Sports and Kayo.

OFF TRACK 

Supercars will kick off its off-track festivities for the Great Race with a street party on Wednesday, October 9. The party will run from 5pm to 7pm in the Bathurst CBD and will be headlined by a Supercars track to town where all 26 Supercars entered in this year’s Bathurst 1000 will make the journey from the Mount Panorama circuit to the party on Russell Street. The CBD party will also feature the annual transporter parade and driver signing session, which is normally held during the day.
