Italian MotoGP star Francecso Bagnaia has apologised after he admitted he drove his car into a ditch in Ibiza while over the legal alcohol limit.

Bagnaia was celebrating with friends following his victory at the Dutch Grand Prix late last month — his third win of the season.

The MotoGP championship is currently on a summer break and is set to resume at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone in August.

According to Spanish outlet Diario de Ibiza, Bagnaia crashed a Citroen into a ditch on the side of a road in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Local police arrived on the scene and performed a breath test on Bagnaia, which he failed — blowing a reading of 0.87 mg/L, more than three times the legal limit of 0.25mg/L.

The 25-year-old apologised profusely for his indiscretion on social media.

“As I was leaving the disco at 3am, I was facing a roundabout when I ended up with the front wheels in a ditch without involving other vehicles or people,” Bagnaia wrote.

“However, the alcohol test carried out by the police found that the blood alcohol level was higher than what is allowed by Spanish law.

“I am sorry for what happened; I am practically a non-drinker and it was a serious carelessness that should not have happened.

“I apologise to everyone, and I can assure you that I have learned my lesson. Never get behind the wheel after drinking alcohol.”

His Ducati team is yet to comment on the incident publicly.

Bagnaia is currently fourth in the riders’ championship, 66 points behind leader and defending world champion Fabio Quartararo.

Australia’s Jack Miller is seventh in standings on 91 points, while Aussie rookie Remy Gardner is currently 23rd.
