The Queenslander teen dominated Sunday’s Japanese round until the final corners, where a tiny mistake under brakes cost him the victory.
Title rival Alex Marquez inherited the win, extending his championship lead to 25 points, while a frustrated Miller crossed the line in fifth place.
“Frustrating is a word. We were so strong all the way through, led most of the laps, and then to have that little mishap was devastating.
“I’d done all the hard work leading, all the donkey work at the front, and then to have it all end like that was a bit of a shame. But we still put points on the board.”
The rivalry between he and Marquez, the younger brother of MotoGP world champion Marc, reached a fever pitch a month ago when they clashed in Aragon.
Contact between the pair saw Miller skidding down the road on his backside while Marquez raced into the championship lead.
Though Miller publicly wrote it off as a ‘racing incident’, he has mentally placed a target on Marquez’s back for the remainder of the season.
“He sort of came with the first blow, so if that’s the way we’re doing it ... I like to dance like that, so it’ll be good.
“I raced him ever since I’ve been in Europe. We’ve been racing in the Spanish championship and stuff like that together.
“The Marquez family, they like to think that they are the bosses, and they try to make you their ... um, I won’t say it ... they try to make you their ... lower companion,” he said, to the giggles of the press.
“I don’t have anybody giving me any guidance, where Alex has got Marc. I’m learning it all on my own and we’re doing a half-decent job, so we’ll try to take the fight to them, for sure.”
With three more races remaining in the championship, including Phillip Island, Miller is happy to be heading to tracks that he favours as he tries to chase down his points deficit.
“Aragon and Japan haven’t been my favourite tracks, but the last three are on my favourite tracks. I couldn’t think of a better way to finish off the season than at three tracks I really like.
“To be on the Island is always special. The track’s awesome. It’s so fast, you need to have big balls to go around there quick, that’s why Casey (Stoner) was good there and hopefully we can do the same.”
Opening practice for the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix at Phillip Island gets underway on Friday ahead of all the racing on Sunday.
