Latest Michael Schumacher news is ‘not good’: ex-Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo

FORMER Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has opened up about the condition of Formula One legend Michael Schumacher.

SOMBRE ex-Ferrari chief Luca de Montezemolo has admitted that he did not have “good news” about the condition of stricken Formula One legend Michael Schumacher.

The former world champion has been in a coma since December 2013 after suffering head injuries from a skiing accident in the French Alps.

“I get news about him constantly, and unfortunately it’s not good,” said Montezemolo when asked about the German legend in Milan on Thursday.

Montezemolo did not elaborate on 47-year-old Schumacher’s condition, but added: “He was the most successful driver Ferrari ever had. He only suffered one accident in his entire career, in 1999, and it was our fault, not his. Unfortunately, a skiing accident ruined his life.”

Amid speculation Schumacher was at fault for the horrific accident, Montezemolo defended the former champion.

“It’s not true that Michael wasn’t careful on his skis. When he went off piste, he was always careful,” he added. “More than anything, on skis he was very careful.”

In December last year, German magazine Bunte was slammed for reporting that Schumacher was walking again.

Quoting a “confidante” of Schumacher’s, the report claimed he was “very thin — but he can once again walk a little with the help of his therapist”.

“He manages to walk a few steps. He can even raise his arm,” the story added.

Schumacher’s long-term manager Sabine Kehm lashed out at the claims.

“Unfortunately, we are forced by a recent press report to clarify that the assertion that Michael could move again is not true,” Kehm said.

The magazine stood by its claims.

Schumacher first retired from Formula One in 2006 after winning five titles in succession for Ferrari from 2000-2004.

He returned for the 2010, 2011 and 2012 seasons, but never finished higher than eighth overall.
