Lewis Hamilton immediately feared for tragic F2 star Anthoine Hubert after seeing his horror crash live on TV while conducting an interview at the Belgium Grand Prix.

The shaken-up F1 world champion, 34, instantly knew that Saturday’s incident was serious and told the interviewer: “Oh wow, I hope that kid’s good. That’s terrifying”

Hubert hit the barrier at Spa, where he was racing in the Formula 2 race on Saturday.

His Arden car was then hit at around 150mph (240km/h) by the oncoming vehicle of Juan Manuel Correa, who is in hospital with two broken legs and a damaged spine.

Hubert, 22, was confirmed dead by the FIA that night, rocking the world of motorsport.

Belgian authorities have now launched a manslaughter probe.

Hamilton was clearly disturbed as he witnessed the crash on a TV screen behind the interview cameras.

The five-time world champion then terminated the interview while Mercedes and other teams also cut their media duties short.

Hamilton — who had to drive through the section of the track where Hubert was killed during yesterday’s Belgian Grand Prix — led the tributes to the young driver.

He wrote on Instagram: “This is devastating. God rest your soul Anthoine. My prayers and thoughts are with you and your family today.”

Before the F1 race yesterday, in which the drivers wore black armbands, they observed a minute’s silence for Hubert, with the Frenchman’s mother and brother also present.

Race-winner Charles Leclerc, who topped the podium for the first time in his F1 career, dedicated the win to his childhood friend Hubert.

He said: “On the one hand, I have a dream since I was a child that has been realised, and on the other hand, it has been very difficult.

“We have lost a friend first of all, and it’s very difficult in these situations so I would like to dedicate this win to him.

“We have grown up together and my first ever race I did when I was seven with Anthoine, so it’s such a shame what happened.

“I can’t fully enjoy my first victory but it is a memory that will live with me forever.”
