Ferrari’s new recruit Lewis Hamilton has put the Formula One (F1) world on notice after claiming his first win for his new team at the Chinese Grand Prix.

Hamilton arrived in Shanghai after a disappointing season-opening race last weekend at the Australian Grand Prix, finishing 10th in his debut race for Ferrari.

But he looked a force to be reckoned with just a week later in the sprint event on Saturday.

Hamilton got off to a flyer to take the lead into turn one and was not for catching in the 19-lap race.

His sizzling start appeared to be his downfall just halfway through the race when the 40-year-old complained about his tyres degrading and graining.

But it did little to slow Hamilton down, as he actually extended his gap late to take the race in style.

Ferrari hadn’t won a sprint race in four years, but Hamilton never looked in any danger of being caught after spearing across at the start and leading from turn one.

Max Verstappen could not reel in the Englishman and was eventually passed by Aussie Oscar Piastri on lap 15.

Piastri held onto second with Red Bull’s Verstappen in third.

While his teammate Lando Norris had a race to forget, falling from sixth on the grid to finish eighth after making an error on turn six.

But it was Hamilton’s sizzling performance that made the F1 world stand up and take notice.

“Lewis Hamilton wins the sprint in China. What a story. The pace he showed today was utterly ridiculous!!!” one F1 fan wrote on X.

“Congratulations to Sir Lewis Hamilton on his first Sprint victory — and his first win with Ferrari! It was an incredible drive, showcasing his skill and determination,” another said.\

“Lewis Hamilton delivers an incredible performance to win the Sprint Race at the Chinese Grand Prix for Ferrari! What a moment for the seven-time world champion and the Scuderia,” a third commented.

While a fourth wrote: “Lewis Hamilton’s weekend so far: – Fastest qualifying lap ever in Shanghai – Grabs his 1st (sprint) pole for Ferrari – 1st driver to get sprint pole for 2 different teams – Wins his and Ferrari’s first ever sprint race – Leads every lap of sprint That’s how to silence everyone.”

British motorsport driver Alex Brundle was also blown away by Hamilton’s “impressive” Sprint win.

“There’s been so much chatter up until now, but that’s what you hire Lewis Hamilton for. The cover off into turn one to get himself the clean air, and then the management of the tyre through the race, using that clean air to compound the advantage, keep the air over the front wing of course, unchallenged, and then he always had just that little bit of a response to keep the pursuers on the end of the jab,” he said after the race.

“Eventually wins by just under seven seconds over 19 laps. He just snapped immediately back into frontrunning Formula One World Champion mode. That was really, really impressive to watch.”
