Oscar Piastri delivered an ice cold remark after securing his best ever finish during a Formula 1 Grand Prix race on Monday (AEDT).

The Aussie star has gone from strength to strength in his first season and capped off an almighty weekend in Qatar as he finished second behind Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.

But it was thanks to some opening lap carnage that allowed him to leapfrog from his starting position of sixth into second.

Mercedes duo Lewis Hamilton and George Russell entered the race with high hopes of a double podium or even a potential race victory.

Those hopes were dashed before the first corner was even complete.

Hamilton attempted to swoop around the outside of his teammate and Verstappen after a near perfect start from third on the grid.

Unfortunately the gap closed and the Mercedes duo slammed into one another with one of Hamilton’s rear wheels being sent flying and ending his race.

Russell was livid on the radio and placed the blame solely on Hamilton.

“So sorry guys. I wasn’t even looking behind, I was just focused ahead and he just came from nowhere,” Russell said.

“F***ing lost for words, honestly. Just seen the replays on the TV screen. I couldn’t do anything. Totally sandwiched.”

Hamilton spoke after the incident and took responsibility for causing the opening lap carnage, but still gave a little clip to his teammate.

“I’m happy to take full responsibility. I feel sorry for my team. In the heat of the moment … I think George had nowhere to go.”

While Russell bounced back to finish fourth, it was in the cool down room when Piastri delivered the cold-hearted remark.

As replays of the opening lap carnage unfolded Piastri said: “Was it Lewis and George that crashed?”

After being informed by Norris it was, the Aussie went for the jugular.

“Ha! Wow. Thank you Mercedes,” he said.

The podium finish added to an impressive weekend in Qatar for the McLaren rookie who secured his first every victory in Formula 1 after taking out the Sprint race.

Piastri’s win was McLaren’s first since Daniel Ricciardo triumphed for them at the 2021 Italian Grand Prix and it was only the second time this season that Red Bull had been defeated.

“I am very happy but that was a stressful race. We did a great job,” he said after the Sprint win.

The Formula 1 grid will now head to Texas for the United States Grand Prix around the Circuit of the Americas which gets underway on October 23 from 6am (AEDT).
