The 20-year-old led all 37 laps to get the victory ahead of Frederik Vesti and Victor Martins. It’s the fourth race win of Doohan’s F2 career.

Doohan didn’t pit until lap 24 and emerged still with a comfortable lead, surging to victory as he looked in a class of his own — wrapping up the hat-trick of pole position, fastest lap and race victory.

The Aussie youngster has had a horror run of luck during his time in Formula 2, including when his car caught fire in a terrifying crash at Monaco earlier this year.

Commentator Alex Jacques said: “Doohan is on another planet compared to everyone today.

“A frustrated figure for so much of this season, is on is way to celebrating a superb drive. What a dominant drive by the young Australian. His long wait is over with a drive of real style.”

Jack Doohan said on team radio: “That was just a perfect race. The car was unbelievable.

“I’m stoked. It was an awesome qualy and then to have a race like that, it was awesome. The car was on rails.”

There were heartwarming scenes after the race when Doohan was embraced in the paddock by his dad Mick Doohan, who won five MotoGP world championships.

Doohan is Alpine’s F1 reserve driver this season and has driven the team’s F1 car as part of his training program with the Alpine Academy.

His victory in Hungary was exactly the type of drive that proved why he’s so highly touted and is tipped to be the next Aussie to race in F1.

With the returning Daniel Ricciardo joining Oscar Piastri on the F1 grid in Hungary, Doohan was asked post-race if there’s room for three Australia’s in F1.

He replied with a grin: “I’m sure there is and I’ll get comfy.”
