McLaren F1 driver Lando Norris has earned plenty of fans on the track this season but the 20-year-old rising star has stolen hearts as well with an incredible gesture.

Norris, who claimed his first podium at the Austrian Grand Prix and a stunning fifth at the Styrian Grand Prix to sit fourth in the driver’s championship after three races, turned the design of his helmet over to six-year-old fan Eva Muttram.

She won a competition to design Norris’ helmet for this weekend’s British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

It comes after the F1 had to relax a rule they bizarrely implemented to limit the amount of different helmet designs each driver could have each year.

The crayon inspired design features the youngster‘s interpretation of Norris’ car on the back of the helmet.

“I‘m a big fan of changing things up with my helmet and expressing myself and just creating cool things,” Norris said via the F1 Instagram account. ”It was meant to be one race at Silverstone to give it out to the fans. And Eva was the winner, six years old, who came up with a very original design, one that really brought me back to when I was five, six, seven, when I was growing up, creating my own designs and my own helmets. It brought back some cool memories.”

He also revealed the winning design on Instagram, saying “it just reminded me a lot of when I was younger scribbling away coming up with some cool things, it’s just super original” as well as teasing more competitions in the future.

Despite being in just his second season in Formula One, Norris has earned himself a lot of fans with Twitter gushing over Norris‘ gesture.

NHL social player development manager Dakota Crawford said: “So wholesome. Lando is a gem and truly sets the standard for athletes on social.

Other fans of the design called it the “Best looking helmet on pitlane easy”, that ”the crayon look is actually cool as hell when on the helmet” and that Norris is ”number one”.

It‘s a brilliant concept but comes after Norris vowed to change how he worked with social media after last season.

Despite using his social channels in an attempt to show off his personality last year, the young Brit admitted he copped some negative attention after sharing too many jokes.

“I’ll still have fun, I’ll still make jokes and do what I do,” he said at the launch of McLaren’s car in February.

“But there’s times when sometimes maybe I need to – not shift my focus because I still worked hard, every time I needed to work on things and focus, I did – but things can get portrayed quite differently from what I know and see myself compared to the outside world.

“A lot of people see me make jokes and whatever, and therefore they turn and put a lot of blame [for] mistakes I do on me having fun and them seeing me look like I not focus compared to other drivers.“

After impressing during the season suspension during the E-series races, Norris‘ performance to start the season proper have fans excited.

And combining with Aussie larrikin Daniel Ricciardo next season when he joins McLaren, the pair will form a likeable duo.

Ricciardo announced he was moving from Renault to McLaren in May with most fans already looking forward to the new partnership.

It’s a prospect that has fans salivating over the line up with the pair already sharing plenty of laughs and proving to be two of the more popular drivers with their antics.

This included a press conference last season when Ricciardo left Norris crying tears of laughter when the 30-year-old Aussie asked him if he had “any pubes yet”.

Taking a leaf out of Ricciardo’s book, Norris also started his chat with Sky Sports’ Ted Kravitz in Spanish.
