Family makes $4.4m decision amid Michael Schumacher health mystery

After Michael Schumacher’s wife sold their mansion, the F1 icon’s family has made another big move as his condition remains a mystery.

Michael Schumacher’s family has reportedly splashed out $4.4 million on a huge plot of land in Majorca to build stables on.

The F1 legend’s daughter Gina and wife Corinna are said to have bought the 13-acre plot to “raise and ride horses on” as he continues his recovery from a devastating ski accident in 2013.

The land is reportedly in Puerto Andratx — near to the $50 million mansion Corinna is reported to have bought from Real Madrid president Florentino Perez in 2017.

It was reported earlier this month Corinna was selling the family’s $9 million mansion on Lake Geneva in Switzerland.

Schumacher’s daughter Gina, 24, is a non-professional horse rider and equestrian while Corinna won the European Championship in western-style horse riding in 2010. Gina’s boyfriend Iain Bethke is also a show jumper.

According to Majorca newspaper Diario de Mallorca, the intention of buying the new plot of land is to allow “Gina to practice her favourite sport” on the Spanish island in the Mediterranean.

Diario de Mallorca reported: “The objective is to raise and ride around 20 horses on it, as Michael Schumacher’s daughter is a keen equestrian.

“Stables for the horses, that will be transferred from Switzerland, will be built on it.

“The intention is for Gina to practice her favourite sport in Majorca, as the idea is that the family will increase their number of trips to the island, especially in winter.”

Corinna has kept tight-lipped about her husband’s condition.

Schumacher is a motorsport legend and enjoyed his greatest success with Ferrari, winning five consecutive world titles in red from 2000-2004. In 2019, Gina embodied the Scuderia when she kitted herself and her horse out in Ferrari gear as she took part in a freestyle competition in Italy.

Gina stole the limelight on that occasion as her F1-themed routine included several pit stops and tyre changes along the way.

Schumacher, 52, was put into a medically induced coma for six months after suffering a catastrophic brain injury in December 2013 while skiing with son Mick — who was 14 at the time and has now graduated to F1 with Haas.

He fell and hit his head on a rock while crossing an off-piste area on the slopes above Meribel in the French Alps — suffering a serious head injury despite wearing a ski helmet.

Doctors said he would most likely have died had he not been wearing the safety gear, and the seven-time world champion was flown to Grenoble Hospital.

The German racing legend, who had 91 Grand Prix wins, is believed to be receiving full-time care at the family’s sweeping estate in southwest Majorca, which Corinna bought four years ago.

Michael and Corinna, who married in 1995, previously holidayed on the island of Majorca before his horrific ski incident.

Schumacher’s family has remained private about his life and medical condition since his devastating accident more than seven years ago.

In November, FIA president Jean Todt confirmed that Schumacher was keenly following his son’s progress as he embarked upon a racing career of his own.

Todt, who was in charge of Ferrari when Schumacher drove for the Italian team, visits the German every month and is a regular source of news about his health.

“I see Michael very often — once or twice a month,” Todt told RTL France. “My answer is the same all the time — he fights. We can only wish for him and his family that things get better.”

Renowned neurosurgeon Erich Riederer speculated in a documentary last year that Schumacher is a shell of his former self.

“I think he’s in a vegetative state, which means he’s awake,” Riederer told TMC.

“He is breathing, his heart is beating, he can probably sit up and take baby steps with help, but no more.

“I think that’s the maximum for him. Is there any chance of seeing him like he was before his accident? I really don’t think so.”
