F1 drivers turn feral, wreak havoc in unrecognisable scenes
Formula One drivers turned completely feral as the entire grid took part in a one-off stunt that had stars wreaking havoc everywhere
We’ve never seen Formula One stars as happy as this.
There were hilarious scenes before the Miami Grand Prix on Monday morning (AEST) when the 20 F1 drivers turned into a bunch of big kids in a pre-race activity they couldn’t get enough of.
Instead of the usual pre-race parade where the drivers are shepherded around the track, fans were treated to a Lego race between the 10 teams.

The life-size F1 Lego cars each weigh a tonne, are made of 400,000 bricks, took 22,000 hours to build and were made to reach a top speed of 20/km.
But despite the slow speed, there was no shortage of drama as the Lego cars weaved their way around the track, trying to cut their rivals off.
The drivers couldn’t wipe the smiles off their face as the teammates sat in the car together and sledged everyone, with several drivers filming the action on their phone.
Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli asked his teammate George Russell: “Want me to drive for you?”
After taking the wheel, Russell joked: “Ahh Kimi’s crashing!”
There was some cleaning up to do after Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton was the victim of some “dirty driving” from Alpine’s Pierre Gasly, who won the Lego race with his Aussie teammate Jack Doohan.
Hamilton, who made his F1 debut in 2007, said “that was the most fun drivers’ parade we’ve ever had”.
“Some dirty driving from this one here (Gasly),” the Brit said. “Great fun.”
Oscar Piastri rode shotgun to Lando Norris in McLaren’s Lego vehicle, saying: “I trust my teammate, I think! So I’m pretty happy here chilling.
“I got told they get up to 20km/h, so I’m interested to see how much damage we can all do. Hopefully we don’t have Lego going everywhere.”
Max Verstappen quipped afterwards: “I do think they have to sweep the track there’s quite a bit of lego debris on the track now. A few cars collided along the way.”
After finishing third in the race proper and notching up his fourth podium of the season, Russell said he was still buzzing from the Lego car battle pre-race.
“I think Lando’s a bit upset with me because we had a bit of a crash in the Lego race this morning, I gave him a bit of an injured leg,” Russell said on his way to the podium.
“I don’t know if he’s going to complain at me for something.”
F1 world champion Jenson Button asked the Mercedes star: “So George, what was your favourite race of the day at Miami?”
Russell replied with a grin: “Oh without doubt the race this morning, the Lego race. That was awesome, we need to do that every race.”
The Lego race was even analysed by Sky Sports guru Anthony Davidson, who broke down the shenanigans.
“This was the moment where it all started going wrong when George Russell took to the inside of Turn 3, surprising Charles Leclerc who was being a good boy up until that moment,” Davidson said with a cheeky grin.
“Down towards Turn 17 is where it all really started kicking off. We had a sandwich with Pierre Gasly in the middle of Charles Leclerc and George Russell and making contact.
“I thought, ‘Oh dear’. This is why we have a rule book in Formula One, because without it, stuff like this would happen. Very good fun. Well done to Lego and Formula One to bring smiles onto the F1 drivers’ faces.”
F1 fans couldn’t get enough of the Lego race and were delighted to see the drivers so enthusiastic.
The Mercedes team account posted: “Can we PLEASE do this every weekend @F1 and @LEGO_Group?”

F1 podcaster Tom Bellingham said: “All this effort trying to get F1 to have close racing and the answer was there all along … LEGO.”
ESPN’s Nate Saunders said: “This is incredible - superb work from F1 and LEGO bringing it together.”
One fan wrote on X: “They look happier with the lego cars than with the real F1 car.”
A second said “Okay but why is it like super cool to see lego cars being driven.”
Another joked: “This is more exciting than the actual race lmao.”
As for the actual race, Piastri won the Miami Grand Prix to claim his third victory in a row and extend his championship lead over McLaren teammate Lando Norris to 16 points.
It was a day to forget for fellow Aussie Jack Doohan who crashed out, while Lewis Hamilton was scathing of Ferrari’s race strategy in some savage team radio messages.
