McLaren has apologised to Daniel Ricciardo and Lando Norris after both drivers finished out of the points in a lacklustre outing at the Canadian Grand Prix on Monday (AEST).

Ricciardo finished 11th and Norris in 15th on a day to forget for the papaya team in Montreal as Max Verstappen claimed another win to extend his lead in the championship.

Ricciardo started ninth on the grid and settled into the middle of the field but it all went wrong from there as a slow pit stop dropped him out of contention.

McLaren called both its drivers into the pits at the same time but the bold double stacking strategy didn’t pay off as Ricciardo’s slow stop held up Norris, who has made to wait even longer because the team brought out the wrong tyres.

It was the third time this season both McLaren drivers finished out of the points.

It was another underwhelming race for Ricciardo and Sky Sports host Simon Lazenby said “he was never really in it”.

Pit lane commentator Ted Kravitz described the pit lane blunder when Ricciardo fell from ninth to 12th as “a disastrously slow stop”.

“McLaren had an unusually bad day for them,” he said.

“No points scored. Norris is 15th and down on power because he had to swap out for an old engine.

“That was not a good day for McLaren.”

Ricciardo said after the race: “It was not a well polished race.”

McLaren boss Andreas Seidl said the team didn’t give Ricciardo and Norris a competitive car over the course of the weekend and admitted they “didn’t deserve points.

“A very disappointing afternoon for us here in Montreal,” he told McLaren’s website.

“It’s been a tough weekend in general, with the car lacking pace, having reliability issues and suffering an operational issue in the double-shuffle pit stop during the Virtual Safety Car period. We have to acknowledge our competitors did a better job and therefore we didn’t deserve points today.

“We didn’t give Lando or Daniel the package they deserved today, so we have to offer them an apology.

“We have to use this as an opportunity to learn, and come back stronger in two weeks for our home race at Silverstone.

“We simply didn’t have the pace, and then had to manage a few other things as well. That was tough, it just put us too far out of contention.

“We were unlucky today in many places, and also just didn’t have the pace to race and overtake the people we wanted to race against. It was very difficult to overtake in general and that hurt our pace.

“We simply couldn’t get into the positions we wanted to be in. I think the pace wasn’t too bad, still not good enough, but not too bad, just the fact we couldn’t overtake, hurt us badly today.

“We’ve got work to do. There were mistakes from my side, mistakes from the team’s behalf and we’ll just need to step back, refresh, go again and do a much better job in the next one.”

Speaking to Formula 1’s website post race, Ricciardo lamented the fact they “just weren’t quick enough”.

“We were just not really quick today, we were struggling for some pace and then we had to manage a few issues a well so not being able to push and attack put us too far out of the battle for points,” he said.

“Simply not a very fast-paced race for us. Just a little bit of temperature stuff (was holding us back). So just managing that.

“Pushing 100 per cent we could just hang on to top 10 but once we start to manage temperatures and things like this, it put us out of the fight. Would love to have had a better race but we simply just weren’t quick enough.”
