Australian Formula 1 star Daniel Ricciardo has provided an update from his hospital bed following a horror crash during practice at the Dutch Grand Prix.

Ricciardo hurtled into a barrier at turn three of the unforgiving seaside circuit, with his left hand on the wheel and absorbing the impact.

An X-ray after the incident revealed he had sustained a break to a metacarpal in his left hand, forcing him out of action.

As the rest of the field took to the Zandvoort circuit on Sunday evening, Ricciardo went under the knife.

The 34-year-old took to Instagram on Monday morning to provide an update on the surgery.

“Hey everyone. Had surgery this morning, got my first bit of metal work so that’s pretty cool,” he wrote.

“Big thanks to everyone who reached out and kept my spirits up.

“This ain’t a setback, just all part of the comeback.”

Ricciardo described his misfortune on only his third race back from a sabbatical as “really unfortunate and frustrating”.

“I’ll try to recover as quickly as I can,” he said on Saturday.

“Obviously, I’d love to get back soon, but I also want to ensure we do things the right way, so I come back strong and competitive.”

The crash came shortly after fellow Aussie Oscar Piastri lost control on the same bend and was stranded in the barrier.

“I remember coming into Turn 3,” said Ricciardo.

“I had already gotten into the corner and then saw Piastri, so it was either hit him or the wall. When I hit the wall, I didn’t have enough time to take my hands off the steering wheel, so the wheel came and hit my hand.

“I wish the team well, and I’m sorry for the change in plans again. It’s a chance for Liam to have a go, and I wish him and the team a strong weekend.”

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner predicted the Aussie could be back behind the wheel of his AlphaTauri for the Singapore Grand Prix on September 17.

“I’m sure, at the back of his mind, he’s probably got Singapore as a target. But then again, Singapore is probably one of the most tough circuits on the calendar. But nature will take its course,” Horner said to Sky Sports.

“These guys, we see it in MotoGP, they bounce back pretty quick so he’s headed off today to Barcelona. They may even have a little operation on him tomorrow to just tidy up where that break is. It’s quite a clean break and then, of course, it’s all about the recuperation and how long that takes.

“Any normal human being would probably be about 10 to 12 weeks, but we know that these guys aren’t normal. So, it will all be about the recovery process — how long that will take, is it going to be three weeks, a month, is it six weeks? Nobody really knows.”

New Zealand youngster Liam Lawson took the place in Ricciardo’s AlphaTauri and after struggling in qualifying, finished the race in 13th ahead of teammate Yuki Tsunoda who finished 15th.
