Daniel Ricciardo spills on tattoo bet with Renault team principal Cyril Abiteboul

Daniel Ricciardo hasn’t enjoyed the success he had hoped for at Renault, but he can leave an everlasting mark with one simple achievement.

Every single Australian F1 fan wants nothing more than to see Daniel Ricciardo return to the front of the grid and get back on the podium.

Since his blockbuster switch to Renault, Ricciardo has failed to finish in the top three with his best result for the French team coming at Monza last year when he crossed the line fourth.

The last time we saw the smiling Aussie step up to the podium came all the way back at the 2018 Monaco Grand Prix, a race he just so happened to win.

Now a new layer has been added to why we should all want to see Ricciardo celebrating. And it has nothing to do with seeing him down a shoey.

Ahead of Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix, Ricciardo revealed his goal for the 2020 season and the bet he made with team boss Cyril Abiteboul.

After a 2019 season riddled with mechanical failures, the Aussie’s goal was to end up on the podium and if he could secure Renault’s first top-three finish since 2016, Abiteboul would get his first ever tattoo.

“It’s a bit foggy, but I believe he chooses placement and size, and I choose the design,” Ricciardo said. “We’ll clear that up. But it’s a tattoo and he does not have any, so it’s a big deal for Cyril.”

When pressed on what design he had in mind, Ricciardo wasn’t certain but figured it would come to him in the moment.

“I don’t know, I think it will be something probably a little spontaneous, spur of the moment,” he said.

“But it’s got to be something funny that when he looks at it, he shakes his head and it’s like, ‘Remember those times?’ One of those ones.”

Ricciardo is set to partner up with Lando Norris behind the wheel of a McLaren next season, but said leaving Renault without a podium finish would be disappointing.

“It’s more if the opportunity presents itself and we miss out on that, for sure I’d be disappointed,” he said.

“But if I race every race my hardest and I’m finishing sixth every race because of that, then I’m probably not going to be devastated.

“But I do want to stand back up there and be delivered a trophy on a robot or whatever they’re doing now. I miss that. And I’ll probably get a fine for drinking out of my shoe, but it will be worth it.”

Renault have shown some promising signs in 2020. Ricciardo finished fourth at the British Grand Prix then qualified fifth for last weekend’s 70th Anniversary Grand Prix, also at Silverstone. Things didn’t go according to plan during the race, however, with Ricciardo finishing 14th.

Things are looking up at the Spanish Grand Prix with the Aussie clocking the fourth fastest time during the first practice session.

“It was really similar (to Silverstone) actually,” Ricciardo told the F1 website. “We had a quiet Silverstone FP1, then a delicious FP2, similar here today.

“Max just got me for (third), I wanted that again so he’s cut me deep, but it was a good day.”

Ricciardo however knows the car this time around is “considerably better” than last season and says the team’s point tally isn’t reflective of how far they’ve come.

“I think the car certainly has made a big step forward and it goes back to the first practice in Austria, after such a long break, jumped in the car and it just felt easy, and it was nice to drive and it was just there, really, from the get-go,” he said.

“It’s been strong and I think 20 points is great but there’s more in that so it’s considerably better.

“I think we’ve proved we’re a Q3 car.

“Maybe a top five could be a stretch … (but) I think the only way we kind of miss out on Q3 is if we make a mistake on our lap perhaps. But I think typically if everything’s running smooth, then we should be there.

“We’ll see what happens here but I’m excited to get some more good qualifyings and then convert them to a good race.”
