Daniel Ricciardo reveals weirdest shoey request
The man who started the worldwide ‘shoey epidemic’ has revealed the lengths fans will go to get him to drink out of his boot.
F1 favourite Daniel Ricciardo is blamed for starting a worldwide craze of doing a ‘shoey’, and he’s revealed just how much his fans want to do one with him.
Ricciardo sat down with The Project’s Georgie Tunny where he was asked about his now infamous stunt of drinking champagne out of his boot.
“I don’t know if you’re aware, there’s a shoey epidemic right now, not just here but across the world and you were the cause,” Tunny joked.
The F1 star then revealed just how ‘shoey crazed’ his fans are, approaching him in the streets of New York to drink with him.
“A guy pretty much ran across the street for a photo and then started taking his shoe off,” he said.
Despite how eager the fan was, Ricciardo had to decline the offer.
“It was still daylight, so it wasn’t the time for it and I hadn’t won a race recently so it wasn’t right, but the shoey is real,” he said.
“Australia should be proud.”
He then revealed he was so into the post race celebration, he had dug deeper into its roots.
“I looked up the history, I believe it goes back to the very, very early days, I want to say I looked it up and I think it’s German, German ancestry,” he said.
Tunny didn’t want to have a bar of it, saying that it was claimed as an “Australian tradition”.
Ricciardo also revealed how he was feeling about his upcoming “double homecoming”, signing on as the third driver for Redbull in Australia.
“I’m certainly more relaxed coming into this weekend,” he said.
“My role’s different to what it has been the last decade or so, but it still feels like there’s a lot of energy and I feel like in the city everyone’s still stoked and excited.”
