Canadian Grand Prix: Daniil Kvyat tees off at ’stupid’ F1 rule; Verstappen reflects on horror show; Lewis’ magical weekend

DANIIL Kvyat has gone for the jugular, unleashing a blistering spray that spared nobody after a horror Canadian Grand Prix.

FORMULA 1 young gun Daniil Kvyat has unloaded on race officials after a disappointing Canadian blowout.

The Toro Rosso driver was given two different penalties for the same breach early in the race when car problems saw him become the last driver to get off the grid ahead of the formation lap, despite being 11th on the grid. The slip-up violated F1 regulations, meaning the 23-year-old had to cop a drive-through penalty.

It wasn’t an ideal start in Montreal for Kvyat, but it was about to get much worse. Soon after his pit lane penalty, officials admitted Kvyat should have been given a 10-second penalty and enforced it on the already fuming driver at his next stop.

Kvyat exploded over the radio, complaining about the “joke” of the situation.

“I can’t remember which one, there were a few frustrations today,” he said after the race. “I was angry with what’s going on. Another penalty — it’s a joke, right?”

The 23-year-old then piled on the criticism of race stewards, claiming they were “sleeping” and needed a coffee.

“They have a job to do which is not so difficult in my opinion and they cannot do the job properly,” he said via Motorsport.com. “They were clearly sleeping today in their office, so maybe they needed some coffee there.”

Kvyat wasn’t done yet, though, saying he would be having a word with F1 Race Director Charlie Whiting.

Are we taxi drivers here or Formula 1 drivers? I don’t understand this. It’s a circus, a stupid f***ing circus,” he said.

“I will go and talk to Charlie. It’s annoying me, it’s really annoying me. A simple job, and he can’t even do that job properly.

“Maybe it’s better to go in the back room because now the heat is up for me I will not want to say anything wrong to any of them and I’m not really sure it’s Charlie.

“I want to understand first of all who does this job. All I know is our team manager was for 10 laps arguing with the FIA that we shouldn’t get another additional penalty and they said, ‘No, sorry, we have this.’”

MAX REFLECTS ON MONTREAL HORROR SHOW

Another day, another disappointing Red Bull hiccup.
Another day, another disappointing Red Bull hiccup.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen had a race to forget in Montreal, dropping out of the fight for the podium with engine failure.

The 20-year-old admitted he was “tired” of experiencing technical hiccups and said a spot on the podium next to teammate Daniel Ricciardo was very possible before having to retire.

“The way the race ended for me was very frustrating after such a good start,” he said, per Formula1.com.

“I think a podium was possible but once again we come away with nothing. The start was really good, straight away I felt no wheel spin and could just put the power down and make some places. I had a little bit of contact with Sebastian (Vettel) on the first corner, running wide there means it can sometimes happen.

“From there on the pace felt good and I was looking after the tyres and brakes as we had no chance of catching Lewis. I was just concentrating on doing my own race when I suddenly lost all power and everything shut down.

“I have had a lot of disappointments recently, I guess that’s racing but sometimes you get tired of it.”

HAMILTON: ‘IT WAS ONE OF MY BEST WEEKENDS’

We’d say this would be a pretty good weekend too.
We’d say this would be a pretty good weekend too.

Not a lot went wrong for Mercedes veteran Lewis Hamilton this weekend.

The 32-year-old blazed home to take pole position with a fiery qualifying lap to sit as the clear favourite on race day.

Hamilton was also involved in Mercedes’ first 1-2 finish for the year with teammate Valtteri Bottas finishing second.

When asked if 2017’s weekend in Canada was one of the greatest in his career, Hamilton hesitated before answering in the affirmative.

“Each weekend you just want to arrive as a more solid, complete driver,” he said in a post-race press conference.

“I think this weekend I would like to hope being that I’m older, more experienced, further down the line, I would like to think I’m a lot more composed, a lot more complete as a driver. In terms of performance I would like to think it was one of the best weekends, yeah.”
